Burbank Senior Artists Colony: Clarence Johnston’s “Beat the Drum” Class

Former resident Clarence Johnston brings his years of musical experience and knowledge of percussion to stress relieving and storytelling through the use of drum techniques and sounds. Clarence gets a lot of joy from the people who show up for his class.  “They always turn up with positive energy and attitude.” A few of the participants are in their 90s, but they are so full of life, and so enjoy the feeling of freedom and fun this workshop gives them, that they feel the years drop off.  Clarence’s performances at BSAC have encouraged more residents to participate in this wonderful workshop.

[EngAGE C.O.O. Maureen Kellen-Taylor wrote a  post for our blog when Clarence was the 2012 recipient of the Living Legends of Jazz Award. In 2011, he was featured in the National Center for Creative Aging’s “Beautiful Minds” series. He provides classes at other EngAGE communities, too.]
