EngAGE Is Thankful: Staff – Day Four

EngAGE is celebrating Thanksgiving all month!

EngAGE is thankful for the people who help us pursue our mission to transform affordable housing communities into vibrant centers of learning, wellness, and creativity. This week, we’ll be sharing photos and a bit of information about all of our staff members. Liv Schaffer, Program Director, Northern CA (Crescent Park)

Liv Schaffer joined EngAGE recently, and brought optimism, positive energy, and a sense of humor to her work. She has designed and implemented arts programming in a variety of settings, including older adult housing, public schools, healthcare, veteran and foster care centers, and festivals. Liv is also a professional dancer.


Arnold Schmidt, Program Director (Piedmont)

Arnold Schmit also joined EngAGE recently. He is an accomplished musician with a passion for the arts and technology. He also has a background in graphic arts. Originally from Germany, Arnold has lived in the LA area for over 30 years. He’s enthusiastic about life-long learning.


Laura Spidell, Program Director/Social Services Coordinator, EngAGE Northwest (Cascadian Terrace, Patton Home)

Laura Spidell joined us recently at EngAGE Northwest. She previously worked as a city planner in California, focusing on community planning and housing accessibility. She got involved with the Alzheimer’s Association while caring for her mother. Laura looks forward to bringing creative programming to the communities she serves.


Kathleen M. Sullivan, PhD, Regional Director, EngAGE Northwest

EngAGE CEO/Founder Tim Carpenter says, “We are truly thankful to have Dr. Kathleen Sullivan as our Regional Director for Oregon as she has done a fantastic job building a team, deepening relationships with developer partners, and working on our new Community for All Ages communities.” One of Kathleen’s strengths is her connection to a variety of communities within the NW, from academia to government to the arts, and as the founder of the Oregon Statewide LGBTQ Service Coalition. Her connections and experience translate into innovative solutions and a creative approach to reducing isolation for residents.


Amber Thorneycroft, Program Director (Emporia)

Amber Thorneycroft also recently joined EngAGE. She has been employed in the nonprofit sector for twenty years, having had a wide variety of experience in childcare, development, event planning, and program management. The skills she has polished serve her well as she works to build community with the families at Ontario Emporia Apartments.


Phu Tran, Social Services Coordinator (Flower Park Plaza

Phu Tran has a BA in Social Work from Cal State LA, and has been a social worker serving older adults for more than six years. His goal is to empower and encourage our residents, provide them with necessary resources, and spend quality time with them. Phu’s bilingual ability is a tremendous asset, and allows him to connect with residents in an especially meaningful way.
