Addressing the Needs of Elders in Bedford-Stuyvesant

SENIOR-SERVICESThe Harvard School of Public Health reports that “the needs of the world’s growing over-60 population should be addressed ‘early and swiftly’ to minimize the risk of future strain on health and economic resources and to maximize the wellbeing and productivity of what some call the ‘silver generation,’ according to a report by the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council (GAC) on Ageing Society.” Read more here.

Organizers of the “Aging Improvement District” in New York’s Bedford-Stuyvesant community are doing just that. “A new program to make Bed-Stuy a better place to grow old promises seating for seniors in long checkout lines and elders-only hours at local banks…senior-friendly retail zones where merchants will offer discounts for elders and allow them to use restrooms that are otherwise off-limits to customers…Special bank hours will be helpful for seniors who need to learn electronic banking because Social Security is ending payments by paper checks next year…They’re part of an ‘Age-Friendly NYC’ initiative created by the Office of the Mayor, the City Council and the New York Academy of Medicine. The motivation: an expected 45% surge in the city’s senior population over 20 years. By 2030, one in five city residents will be over 60.” Read more here.
