The First Annual EngAGE Community Cup: September 16th

EngAGE, Inc., proudly announces the presentation of its first annual Community Cup event! Created and managed by EngAGE, the Community Cup (formerly the EngAGE Senior Olympics) will be an annual Fall event that provides a healthful, outdoor experience through spirited athletic competitions and shared enjoyment for the residents of our EngAGE communities in Southern California.

The day will include not only competitive sporting events and various games played for prizes, but also music, entertaining performances from some of our talented residents, and a delicious lunch. At the end of the day, we’ll wrap up with the presentation of the championship trophy, our EngAGE Community Cup, to the community that scores the most points in the athletic competitions. Each of the attendees also will receive a commemorative t-shirt that celebrates their participation in the event.

Twenty-three of our Southern California communities will be participating in this first annual Community Cup. The entire event, including transportation, meals, and musical entertainment, is provided to the participants at no charge. All costs are met by EngAGE, our partners, and sponsors.

We look forward to many years of Community Cup events!

News from Metro Compton: Technology

EngAGE knows the value of technology, so we help our older adults get comfortable with it. From an article in the New York Times: “Learning new technology skills helps lessen isolation, gerontologists say, keeps the brain active with games, and allows older people to monitor their own health more closely. A robust digital toolbox can even jump-start new careers.” Here are two residents at the Metro @ Compton Senior Apartments in Compton, CA, taking advantage of the community’s computer room.

News from Riverview: Art Exhibition

The art exhibition, “Crossing the Line: Drawing for and with Older Adults,” at Minneapolis College of Art and Design’s Emeritus Gallery features artist residents from our CommonBond Riverview Senior Housing community in Minneapolis, MN. Prior to the exhibition, the artists participated in a 10 week, 2 hours/per week art class presented by The Drawing Project, which was designed to develop their drawing skills, but also to provide them with new ways of seeing and engaging with the world and their community. This exciting exhibition is their culminating event. Stop in and see what these new drawers achieved! Thank you MCAD gallery Director Kerry Morgan and crew for your help and support to make this happen. Learn more about the exhibit at this link on the MCAD website.

GIRISH
with host DR. CONNIE CORLEY

GIRISH is an eclectic artist with roots in jazz, world, and sacred music. His musical talents find expression in a wide array of instruments – including tablas, world percussion, guitar, harmonium, and voice.

While musical at an early age, his first experience of music as sacred art came in college, playing with jazz bands. “During improvisational sessions,” he recalls, “there were these unexplainable moments of synchronicity and intuition that felt like magic.”

These moments came just as Girish was feeling pulled toward a sacred life. A college philosophy class inspired him to explore spirituality through Kundalini yoga, meditation, and the study of Eastern scriptures. By the time of his college graduation, Girish was so deep into these practices that he decided to move into an ashram in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Thus began an unexpected journey-a seeming detour that inadvertently nourished his musical artistry.

In the ashram he discovered the tabla, a percussive instrument from India, and this spiritual connection to music led him to Northern California to study at the Ali Akbar School of Music in Marin County, California. It was in northern California that Girish met other musicians at the forefront of the chant music explosion in this country. Krishna Das was just gaining popularity at that time and Girish played with him regularly. In this context, Girish was quickly introduced to a wider world of music for yoga. Soon he was accompanying many of the names in the yoga music genre.

Since 2000, Girish’s work as a session player has aligned him with the likes of producers Glen Ballard (Dave Matthews Band, Alani Morrisette) and Michael Brook (Nusrat Fatah Ali Khan, Youssou N’Dour) as well as the creative team at Lucas Art. His talents are featured on some of the most popular recordings in the world music/chant music field today. Visit his website to learn more.

On the show, Connie will talk with Girish about his book,  Music and Mantras — an interactive toolkit including more than ninety minutes of companion audio material for personal transformation — and his upcoming engagement with live music and workshops at BhaktifestSeptember 6 – 11.

Connie will also talk briefly with Randy Johnson about the Pasadena Playhouse production of the show he created and directed entitled, Shout Sister Shout! The show, written by Cheryl West, will be at the theater through August 20th. Ticket information here.

News from Metro @ Compton: Summer Luau

Residents had an amazing time this past Thursday at the luau at The Metro @ Compton Senior Apartments in Compton, CA. Management and EngAGE collaborated to provide delicious luau food: grilled chicken, pulled pork, grilled pineapple, side dishes of coleslaw and macaroni salad, and tasty desserts. Everyone enjoyed the entertainment provided by Polynesian hula dancers, who invited the residents to dance with them. We also had the pleasure of listening to Kelly, a young lady who volunteered to play the ukulele.  A perfect way to spend a summer day!
