Profiles: Tony Bennett

“Profiles” is an EngAGE Blog category devoted to occasional posts about older people who have made a significant creative impact in our world. Today’s subject: TONY BENNETT.

From Rolling Stone:

The Library of Congress announced on Tuesday that Tony Bennett will receive the next Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. The award, named in honor of George and Ira Gerswhin, celebrates artists for “promoting the genre of song as a vehicle of cultural understanding, entertaining and informing audiences, and inspiring new generations.” . . . Bennett, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday, has released charting albums in seven different decades. He’s also won 19 Grammys, including Album of the Year for 1995’s MTV Unplugged and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. He still records regularly, hitting Number One on the Billboard Albums Chart with “Cheek to Cheek,” a 2014 duets record with Lady Gaga, and following that with “The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern” in 2015.

If you’re in New York, you can see an exhibit of forty pieces of Tony Bennett’s art grouped into themes Tony has pursued over years–his love of Manhattan, his world travels, and his salute to fellow musicians–along with highlights of his extraordinary career as captured on TV. Show runs through July 9th. The Paley Center also will be presenting a free screening of “Tony Bennett Celebrates 90: The Best Is Yet to Come” each Saturday during the exhibit at 4:00 pm. More info here.

News from Long Beach Senior Artists Colony: Reader’s Theatre Company Concludes 5th Season

On June 15th, the Reader’s Theatre Company produced a special event that celebrated the conclusion of their 5th season at the Long Beach Senior Arts Colony. Under the direction of resident Barbara Fay, the 10-member cast performed, “It’s Always About the Money, Honey,” to a standing-room-only crowd of residents and invited guests. The production was further enhanced by residents providing beautiful floral centerpieces, creative stage décor, and cast photography. Residents enjoyed a Celebration Reception prior to the show and were treated to a delicious assortment of appetizers, desserts, and beverages.  We applaud this theatrical troupe for 5 memorable seasons of entertaining Reader’s Theatre productions!

This performance was supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.

Includes $15,000 awarded to EngAGE, Inc.

National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $82 million to fund local arts projects across the country in the NEA’s second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2017. Included in this announcement is an Art Works award of $15,000 to EngAGE for our EngAGE in Creativity program. The NEA received 1,728 Art Works applications and will make 1,029 grants ranging from $10,000 to $100,000.

“The arts reflect the vision, energy, and talent of America’s artists and arts organizations,” said NEA Chairman Jane Chu. “The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support organizations such as EngAGE, in serving their communities by providing excellent and accessible arts experiences.”

Engage in Creativity is our community-based multidisciplinary arts program focused on seniors. Professional artists provide free college-level classes and events to low-income seniors, delivered on-site at affordable senior apartments. The program provides weekly access to arts programs for thousands of underserved seniors in Southern California, catalyzing the creation of new works of visual art, literature, film, music, and dance. Engage in Creativity will culminate in numerous public arts events such as art shows, performances, readings, and radio show segments.
