Residents who take instructor Nicole Galardo’s Paint & Sip art class at Coventry Court in Tustin, CA were delighted to discover that the community has received a donation of 50 hand-made wooden collapsible easels from Allan White of AH White Construction Management. The students report that they are really great easels and they love to paint on them. Just look at their enthusiasm — and their wonderful art! Thank you, Allan White.

This was the final group project for the Essentials of Aging class at Coventry Court in Tustin, CA. Residents brought in magazine and newspaper clippings that referenced different topics in the Essentials of Aging curriculum discussed over the past 14 weeks. Anna, Barbara, and Gene assembled a collage board with many different pictures, words, and quotes that spoke to them. Looks like a learning experience that was also lots of fun!

The San Clemente High School “Visits of Love Club” and AVID members joined Cotton’s Point Senior Apartment Craft Class this week in San Clemente, CA. The intergenerational programming has given the residents the opportunity to build new friendships and participate in innovative events. The students enjoy sharing stories, helping with the classes, and giving back to their community.

At EngAGE, we often talk about the transformative power of the arts. But it’s not just the students who are transformed; sometimes the Teaching Artists have had their own epiphanies. Here’s one example:
About 15 years ago, Lucy Rose Fischer’s husband had a heart attack. Fortunately, he recovered, but the experience caused both of them to rethink how they wanted to spend their time. Lucy had already had a career as a gerontologist for 25 years, doing research on aging. She decided, “I wanted to spend the rest of my life really focusing on art. So I began my career as an artist. I was 60 years old. I didn’t see this as retirement. I saw it as a new career.” Read more here about her second career as a Teaching Artist.
More people in their 50s and 60s are finding that taking up a musical instrument or singing improves their lives in many ways. Of course, at EngAGE we believe that discovering your creativity through participating in the arts has no age limit at all!

Resident muralist and fine artist, Regina Argentin, opened a solo exhibition entitled “Unseen Forces” at Pacific Avenue Arts Colony in San Pedro, CA, for First Thursday (May 4th). The reception brought a large crowd that gathered in the gallery to view the enchanting artwork, meet the artist, and enjoy libations. An Arts Walk tour group enjoyed a tour of the building and several guests participated in a raffle of one of Regina’s pieces with proceeds to benefit a local dog rescue agency.

Brilliant, a technology patent holder, has been CEO of two public companies and other venture backed start-ups. From 1973 to 1976, he participated in the successful World Health Organization (WHO) smallpox eradication program. In April 2009, he was chosen to oversee the “Skoll Global Threats Fund” established by eBay co-founder Jeff Skoll (Skoll Foundation).
Dr. Brilliant is co-founder of the Seva Foundation which partners worldwide to create self-sustaining programs that preserve and restore sight. Seva programs have helped nearly 4 million people to see again. In just the past year, Seva’s Sight Program has provided one million people with vital eye care services worldwide.
Dr. Brilliant is the author of Sometimes Brilliant: The Impossible Adventure of a Spiritual Seeker and Visionary Physician Who Helped Conquer the Worst Disease in History. The book details the past fifty year’s of his life’s journey across continents which resulted in his direct involvement in some of the most significant medical, spiritual, and social achievements of the past century: the eradication of smallpox in India, curing blindness in over 4 million people, introducing the teachings of the Maharajji to the Woodstock Generation, launching Google’s philanthropic enterprises, and much more.
