Worth Repeating for the Holidays: Arroyo Seco Parkway, First Freeway in Urban Western States, Dedicated – 1940

“Worth Repeating for the Holidays” brings you holiday posts that we think are still timely, interesting, or just plain fun! From 12/30/12:

2015 - pexels - giftsThe Arroyo Seco Parkway, also known as the Pasadena Freeway (State Route 110), was dedicated on December 30, 1940, and marked an important transitional moment in the history of American freeway engineering and transportation, leading to the development of the massive freeway system that now extends throughout the entire Los Angeles area and beyond. But now, there’s an 8.3-mile section of the freeway we can’t call a “freeway” anymore. It’s the Arroyo Seco Parkway once again, after Caltrans officially renamed the roadway, restoring its original moniker from its 1940 debut. The reason? It’s a dangerous stretch and, because the Parkway’s historical status prevents upgrading to meet safety standards, the speed limit is being lowered to 45. Read more here.

Those of us who live in the Los Angeles area find it hard to imagine how we’d get around without the freeways — although sometimes it’s equally hard to imagine how we manage to get around with them!

Worth Repeating for the Holidays: “The Howdy Doody Show” Premieres in 1947

“Worth Repeating for the Holidays” brings you holiday posts that we think are still timely, interesting, or just plain fun! From 12/26/12:

2015 - pexels - giftsThe Howdy Doody Show premiered on 12/27/47 and was on the air from 1947 through 1960. “The idea for Howdy Doody began on the NBC New York radio affiliate WEAF in 1947 with a program called The Triple B Ranch. The three Bs stood for Big Brother Bob Smith, who developed the country bumpkin voice of a ranch hand and greeted the radio audience with, “Oh, ho, ho, howdy doody.” Martin Stone, Smith’s agent, suggested putting Howdy on television and presented the idea to NBC television programming head Warren Wade. With Stone and Roger Muir as producers, Smith launched Puppet Playhouse on 17 December 1947. Within a week the name of the program was changed to The Howdy Doody Show.” Read more about the show here.

Mel Shaw, a designer of the original Howdy Doody, worked for many years as a visual development and design artist for Disney Studios. He help set the style for the animated classic, “Bambi” (1942),   and many others from the studio, including what became  “Fantasia” (1940), “The Fox and the Hound” (1982) and his final Disney project,  1994’s “The Lion King.” Mr. Shaw passed away recently at the age of 97 in Reseda, CA. Read more about his long and fascinating career here.

Worth Repeating for the Holidays: Arturo Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra – 1937

“Worth Repeating for the Holidays” brings you holiday posts that we think are still timely, interesting, or just plain fun! From 12/25/12:

2015 - pexels - giftsTom Lewis, in the Organization of American Historians Magazine of History, described NBC’s plan for cultural programming and the origin of the NBC Symphony:

David Sarnoff, the president of RCA who had first proposed the “radio music box” in 1916 so that listeners might enjoy “concerts, lectures, music, recitals,” felt that the medium was failing to do this. By 1937, RCA had recovered enough from the effects of the Depression for it to make a dramatic commitment to cultural programming. With the most liberal terms Sarnoff hired Arturo Toscanini to create an entire orchestra and conduct it. On Christmas night, 1937, the NBC orchestra gave its first performance—Vivaldi’s Concerto Grosso in D Minor—in an entirely refurbished studio in the RCA Building. “The National Broadcasting Company is an American business organization. It has employees and stockholders. It serves their interests best when it serves the public best.”

Here is a 1954 recording of the same musical selection, featuring the NBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Toscanini.

AARP Funds EngAGE Business Model White Paper

EngAGE thanks AARP for their important grant of $26,500 to develop a white paper on policy on how to replicate our model and make a business case for intergenerational and arts-and-aging programming in affordable housing in America. The paper is sponsored by AARP’s Office of Policy Development and Integration.

EngAGE takes a whole-person approach to creative and healthy aging by providing arts, wellness, lifelong learning, community building, and intergenerational programs to thousands of seniors living in affordable senior apartment communities. Our programming focuses on the combination of mind, body, and spirit to promote active engagement and independent living, and to provide seniors with a purpose in life.

We have recently expanded to serve not only Southern California, but also Portland, OR, and Minneapolis, MN. This white paper will significantly impact our ability to share the EngAGE model in other locations.

News from Vermont Family Apartments: Santa (and the Road Theatre) Delivered!

For the 7th year, EngAGE and the Road Theatre company made Christmas happen for the children at Vermont Family Apartments in Los Angeles. The families who live there are grandparents and their grandchildren. The median income for these families is very low, with grandparents sometimes raising as many as five children in the household. It’s a tradition each year for the Road Theatre’s “Vermont Toy Drive” to raise money to purchase gifts for the children, then hold a wrapping event prior to Santa personally delivering the gifts. NoHo SAC volunteers help out, too.

Take a look at these great photos and learn more about this annual event:

EngAGE Founder and Executive Director Tim Carpenter’s response to the photo above:

This is a beautiful thing, gifts to people who so need them, from our friends at the Road Theatre, Elizabeth Sampson, Taylor Gilbert, Sam Anderson, Scott Alan Smith, Darryl Johnson, and all the beautiful Roadies! Many thanks to you all for making the season brighter for Vermont Family Apartments! And thanks to NoHo SAC volunteer Carol, Program Director Sara Debevec and C.A.O. Nancy Goodhart of EngAGE!

Anticipation before Santa arrives.

Elizabeth Sampson, Road Theatre actor and EngAGE Regional Programs Director, has been the driving force behind this event since its inception:

In November, I start asking for donations for the Vermont kids that the Road has ‘adopted.’ I raise money over the course of the next two monthly company meetings at the Road with roughly 50 company members donating anywhere from $800 to $1300. I get a list of the kids (ages and gender — we started out with 40 kids, there are now over 70), and then go to the nicest Marshall’s in Burbank, as well as Michael’s (for art supplies), and buy toys for every child. We give Target Gift Cards to the 13 to 16 year olds. In addition, I give the Regional Programs Director $300 to buy dinner. In 2014, I bought them a Christmas tree and a really nice Santa Suit.

Santa is ready to give presents to the kids!

What’s inside those boxes?

EngAGE C.A.O. Nancy Goodhart would like to thank the Road Theatre for their generosity in bringing the holiday spirit to the Vermont Family Apartments:

The evening at Vermont Family Apartments was wonderful! We wish you all could have been there to share the feelings of excitement and gratitude.

The empty red chair that awaited Santa’s arrival was such a nice set up, and the loads of your wonderfully wrapped gifts looked so festive around the tree. The kids that were not allowed to open until Christmas, hugged their gifts. Truly a very sweet night. The older kids had no reservations about being there, going to Santa,  and were genuinely pleased with their gift card — borderline overwhelmed with the possibilities of $15.00 !

Thank you to Blair and Megan for assisting with the wrapping, and to Mrs. Claus herself, Elizabeth. You rock again.

On behalf of the folks at Vermont Family Apartments, and EngAGE, a huge heartfelt Thank You for your Gifts of Giving, without which this event would not happen.

~ Nancy Goodhart, EngAGE C.A.O.
