EngAGE welcomes ESSENCE PARKER, M.A., Regional Programs Director for the Dorado, Solara Court, and Villa Anaheim communities in Orange County. Ms. Parker uses her passion for the betterment of vulnerable populations – including at-risk youth, senior, and veteran demographics – to fuel her work in human and social services. Throughout her career, Essence has invested upward of ten years experience performing program development initiatives for such non-profit organizations as Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles and Y.W.C.A of the Harbor & South Bay Area. Essence has also facilitated psychosocial rehabilitation to mentally ill residents at Founder’s House of Hope, with the goal of employment readiness and overall community reintegration. In addition to her role as Regional Programs Director with EngAGE, she is currently an Adjunct Professor at Southern California University of Health Sciences where she teaches Introduction to Psychology courses. Her educational background includes a Bachelor’s of Arts in Behavioral Science and a Master’s of Arts in Organizational Development & Leadership.
From Woodstock to Watergate to the walk on the moon, renowned writing coach ALAN GELB is a Baby Boomer through and through – and proud to be part of a generation that has embraced experimentation, individualism, and activism. The 75 million people that make up the mammoth group of “Baby Boomers” (close to 40% of the nation’s population) has been largely invested in holding age at bay and truly experiencing life, but at a certain point, the time for reflection will come, and with recent phenomena like Death Cafés and Death Over Dinner (both featured on NPR), the dialogue around the third act is rapidly expanding.
In his latest book, Having the Last Say: Capturing Your Legacy in One Small Story, the author takes on the challenge of making sense of life in its third act by helping his readers organize memories and milestones, making the rich and timeless tradition of life review and authentic storytelling accessible to those who have never considered themselves “writers.” Akin to the ethical wills that have long been an element of Jewish tradition, these “last says” are short narratives of 500-1000 words, reflecting on the people, actions, and events that have shaped the writer’s life and values. They can be delivered orally in the author’s honor, kept as a keepsake by family, or simply stashed away – a personal valedictory.
