The Longest Day is a team event to raise funds and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association. Held annually on the summer solstice, the duration of this sunrise-to-sunset event symbolizes the challenging journey of those living with the disease and their caregivers. Teams are encouraged to create their own experience as they fundraise and participate in an activity they love to honor someone facing the disease.

“Experience Talks” co-host/producer Dr. Connie Corley leads the Corley Caregivers Team for the 2015 event, and she invites you to “The Longest Day: Making Memories Last,” a special opportunity to learn and to support the Alzheimer’s Association initiative:

Lino Tagliapietra: Master Glassblower

CREATIVE-ARTS‘”I would like to make glass that’s timeless, that stays forever young,’ says Lino Tagliapietra, a youthful 80-year-old who has been making glass in a timeless fashion for close to 70 years. He pauses, then adds, ‘I’m not sure if it’s possible.’ . . . . Tagliapietra is a rock star in the glass world, one not content to play only his old hits. He still brings an unbridled enthusiasm to his work, using his command of centuries-old techniques to create sensuous, sculptural blown forms, full of vibrant color and pattern.” Read more here.

Talented Artists at Magnolia@Highland and LBSAC Share Their Work

Two recent art shows, one from Magnolia@Highland and one from LBSAC are featured today. Take a look at some great photos and an entertaining video!

From EngAGE Vice President Nancy Goodhart and EngAGE Regional Programs Director Alma Wright:

This spring, EngAGE had the opportunity to partner with CSUSB (Cal State University of San Bernardino) to bring a 7-week art course to The Magnolia@Highland. The course was taught by Art Instruction students, and incorporated art appreciation and practice. It has been an exciting time for these residents. They have enjoyed learning about art, and trying a variety of media and techniques such as perspective drawing, monochromatic painting, sculpture, and even screen printing.

On June 10th, the participants had their own art show to showcase the pieces they created during the course. EngAGE’s Vice President, Nancy Goodhart was in attendance, as well as CSUSB Head Art Instructor, Annie Buckley. Everyone enjoyed background music, refreshments, and most of all…they got to thank their young teachers for introducing them to so much art in so little time! [Click on the photos to enlarge them.]

Helene Weinberg, EngAGE Creative Programs Director at LBSAC sent this video of “A Show of Hands” art show that took place on May 13th.

Nancy Bea Hefley, Dodgers Organist, Retires? Not So Fast!

SPORTSFrom the L.A. Times:

Nancy Bea Hefley, the longest-tenured stadium musician in Los Angeles sports history confirmed that at the end of her 27th year as Dodgers organist, she would be unhappily walking away, a decision she later repeated after being contacted by The Times.

“I am retiring at the end of this season,” Hefley told The Times. “It’s finally gotten to me.”

Even her richest show tune wouldn’t be proper accompaniment for what happened next.

The Facebook exchange began spreading. Twitter talk began buzzing. Hints of outrage began forming. Dodgers officials who had not been previously informed of Hefley’s plans took notice.

Worth Repeating: The Totally Hip, Buttoned-Down Mind of Bob Newhart

“Worth Repeating” is a weekly feature on the EngAGE Blog that will bring you previous
posts that we think are still timely, interesting, or just plain fun! From 6/15/14:

WORTH-REPEATING

“Bob Newhart [84] had modest expectations in 1960 when Warner Bros. Records released his first comedy album, ‘The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart.’

“The recording, which included such seminal Newhart routines as Abraham Lincoln getting notes from his press agent before delivering the Gettysburg Address, was a marked contrast to the more edgy, controversial comedians of the day, such as Lenny Bruce and Mort Sahl.

“‘I never thought much would come of these record albums, to be honest,’ said the affable comedian during a recent lunch near his home in Bel-Air. ‘I thought maybe 25,000 copies might sell. Then it went crazy.’

“How crazy? ‘Button-Down Mind’ sold 1.5 million copies and earned two Grammy Awards.”

Read more here about Bob Newhart’s career that includes his trademark understated stand-up comedy, brilliant sit-coms, and popular films.
