In July of 1960, Jane Goodall, now 81, landed in Tanganyka on a mission: to study the wild chimpanzees. Her world-reknown research has had a significant impact. “Today the social lives of animals from whales to ants have been abundantly cataloged using Goodall’s methodology, which has helped to set the basic ground rules for contemporary field biology. Goodall herself became the first exemplar — before Carl Sagan, Stephen Hawking or Neil deGrasse Tyson — of the pop-culture scientist-communicator. She has inspired countless scientists, from the leader of Save the Elephants to the director of the Orangutan Project, at the same time as she has thrown open the door to other pioneering women in the sciences.” Read an extensive article about her and her work here.
“Just like his New York doppelganger, the 71-year-old Chef Chane runs a restaurant with its own unwritten rules. Rule No. 1: Come on time. Lunch is served only from 12 to 1 and he always runs out of food. Rule No. 2: Don’t ask for a menu. You’ll eat whatever dish the chef decided to cook that day. Rule No. 3: When you step up to the counter and face the imperious chef in his tall white hat, don’t, whatever you do, hold up the line.”

“When her grandson decided to give up his paper round, former Post Office worker Beryl Walker offered to take over his duties. Thirty-five years later and the 88-year-old is still doing the paper round in Gloucester. . . Now, after clocking up thousands of miles delivering over a million newspapers on her bike, Beryl has been awarded the Guiness World Record for being the oldest paper girl in the world.” Read more here.

“Flo Fox is legally blind, yet she has shot over 120,000 images and counting. “I’d like to prove that even though I’m a total cripple, I can still take fantastic photos,” Fox says of her continuously growing portfolio. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at age 30, Fox, now 69 and completely paralyzed, still takes her camera with her everywhere, having attendants, friends, and strangers take photos for her with an autofocus camera.” Read more and see her photos here.
