The Harlem Renaissance West concept was created and developed by Yvonne Beatty to reaffirm the cultural importance of African-American artwork to America and the world. You’re invited to join in the Renaissance, beginning January 18th at 2 PM. Admission is free.  The celebration will include art, music and poetry.

Another Face of Poverty in the U.S.

“William McPherson has a Pulitzer Prize, but little money to his name.

“In a candid personal essay published in The Hedgehog Review, the 81-year-old journalist revealed his descent into near poverty. While his trajectory was unexpected, McPherson’s financial state represents a common narrative in America today.

‘”I started life comfortably middle-class, maybe upper-middle class; now, like a lot of other people walking the streets of America today, I am poor,’ the acclaimed author wrote. ‘To put it directly, I have no money.’

“More than 45 million people, or 14.5 percent of the U.S. population, lived below the poverty line last year, the Census Bureau reported in September. And economists forewarn that elderly Americans are on the brink of experiencing the greatest retirement crisis in ‘the history of the world.'”

Eric Bransbury: 98-Year-Old Active Mural Artist

Artistic EquipmentGreat NPR story about a Colorado Springs artist: “Eric Bransby is one of the last living links to the great age of American mural painting. He studied with one of this country’s most famous muralists — Thomas Hart Benton — and went on to create his own murals in prominent buildings across the west. The artist is now 98 and still painting.”

I tend to win.” The abstract artist talks about the man who saved her paintings from the trash bin, and being discovered at the age of 89. Booming: “If there is one thing older workers fear in this economy, it’s losing their jobs as they approach retirement. But that is exactly what happened in March to Richard L. White, who was the director of career services at Rutgers University for 22 years. . . . In January, shortly before leaving, Mr. White filed an age discrimination lawsuit against Rutgers. Three other longtime administrators who were also terminated joined the lawsuit, bringing into the open an increasingly contentious workplace issue.” Read more here.

The Surprising Truth about Older Workers: “[G]etting people like Simoneau back to work can mean overcoming age discrimination. . . . [But] when it comes to actual job performance, [Wharton professor Peter] Cappelli says, older employees soundly thrash their younger colleagues. “Every aspect of job performance gets better as we age,” he declares. “I thought the picture might be more mixed, but it isn’t. The juxtaposition between the superior performance of older workers and the discrimination against them in the workplace just really makes no sense.” Read more here.

Ray Bethell Flies a Kite — Like You’ve Never Seen Before!

We posted this a couple of years ago, but it’s so wonderful that it seems a perfect inspiration for this year, too! Here’s a lovely video featuring the amazing, almost magical talents of Ray Bethell, master of the art of multiple kite flying. Bethell performs a kite ballet to “Flower Duet” from the opera Lakmé by Clément Philibert Léo Delibes. The video is by Robert Holbrook.
