On October 1st at Royal Albert Hall, Jonathan Ross was the host of “an evening of pure A-list reminiscence heaven, featuring music from the LSO and anecdotes from Michael Caine himself which, on occasion, brought the house down. . . . Caine was a joy, uncorking anecdotes new and old and all of them vintage.” Click here to read more about this event. Michael Caine is 81.

Residents started working on this massive project in March. From the beginning, they were challenged to think in 3-dimensional terms and created their town model from scratch using cardboard, polymer clay, wooden sticks, acrylic paints, paper mache, gravel, dried moss, and anything else they could think of to realize this unique vision. Many of their ancestors’ stories of life in the old days spun wildly while they were hard at work, as well as a few heated debates on everything from the style of the buildings to the number of outhouses the town should have.
In the end, everyone was so proud of their creation all they could do was sit there and stare at it with gleaming eyes. They have definitely outdone themselves and were excited to show it off at the EngAGE Senior Olympics, where they brought home the Gold Medal in the Art Competition!

EngAGE Websites & Social Media Manager Cynthia Friedlob is one of only twelve artists whose work will be featured at the preview show of BOTART III, the first transcontinental BOTART exhibition. Each artist will display a painted wine barrel and a wall-hung work of art. WestEDGE is a four-day curated fair showcasing the best in modern design for architects, the design trade, and discerning design aficionados. The exciting OPENING NIGHT PARTY, a special event to benefit Heal the Bay, will include a silent auction of the barrels. The display barrels will continue to tour for BOTART (there are several stops planned before the full show of 80 artists concludes in Paris), and the winning bidders will receive their own specially commissioned barrels created by the artists. If you’re a visual or performing artist of a certain age, you probably don’t need to be convinced of the importance of your art in your life. But did you know that there’s research to back up how you feel? Two studies have documented the positive influence of the arts in the lives of seniors. Yes, like all research papers they’re not exactly light reading, but a couple of basic conclusions are no surprise to creative seniors:

“We found both the ART CART (older) artists and the control group (of older artists) to be extremely high functioning, often more than the general population. We recommend caution here since the art world is very ageist and older artists may have self-reported as more fit and without impediments.” [And if you perceive yourself or choose to present yourself as more fit than you are, even that seems positive to a layperson like myself.]
Still Kicking Aging Performing Artists in NYC and LA Metro Areas:Information on Artists IV
“This study of aging performing artists 62+ in the metro areas of LA and NYC complements our earlier study of aging visual artists. In NYC, 219 and in LA, 51 professional actors, dancers, choreographers, musicians and singers were studied, with results showing their resilience, tenacity and lifelong engagement with their art and the public.”
This is such a beautiful and poignant project! Every year for the past 40 years, Nicholas Nixon has photographed his wife and her sisters. Each of the photographs would stand on its own as a fine work of art, but to see the entire series at once is something quite special. See it here.

Everyone agrees that this year’s EngAGE Senior Olympics were fabulous! Congratulations to the Gold Medal Championship winners: Long Beach Senior Arts Colony! And thanks to Helene Weinberg, Creative Programs Director at LBSAC, for putting together this 10 minute video of the Games, which were held on September 27th at Cerritos Park East.
