JULIE ADAMS – Actress: Fans of the horror film “Creature from the Black Lagoon” tend to believe that Julie Adams became a leading lady on the strength of her role in it as the imperiled — and fetchingly underclad — heroine. In fact, she has been cast in many leading film roles, notably in “Bend in the River,” “The Private War of Major Benson,” “Mississippi Gambler,” “Bright Victory,” and “Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, ”among others.

She’s worked opposite Jimmy Stewart, Tyrone Power, Arthur Kennedy, Rock Hudson, Charlton Heston, Elvis Presley, John Wayne, Glen Ford, and Van Heflin. She’s also made guest appearances in over one hundred television shows, from “The Andy Griffith Show” to “Marcus Welby, M.D.” to, more recently, “Lost” and “Cold Case.” If you were a fan of “Murder, She Wrote,” you would have seen her often as real estate agent Eve Simpson. The Beginnings of a Very Special Project
In April, participants in The Magnolia’s Artists’ Round Table put their heads together and decided to start building an 1800’s old western town inspired by their own great grandparents’ stories of life shortly after slavery was abolished. The town will be a three-dimensional landscape in miniature made out of polymer clay, wood, paint, and any other materials we can think of along the way to help depict the landscape, buildings, animals and people in a realistic way. We began with a draft drawing on Kraft paper to help us decide where and what we would put in our town, then we tackled making the first shacks with tin roofs and a few outhouses. This month, we will be working on a church/school, a mercantile, a bank and a few other buildings, as well. So far, everyone who has worked on this project is impressed with the results and simply cannot believe how realistic their creations look. They know this project will take a few more months, but they hope to finish it by September so that it can be entered in the Senior Olympics. ~ Alma Wright, Site Leader, The Magnolia at Highland

Harry Ettlinger, 88, is one of six surviving “Monuments Men,” whose art-saving exploits were recently featured in the film of the same title. A 19-year-old GI and a native German speaker, Ettlinger was part of the team that rescued a self-portrait of Rembrandt–a painting that was from his hometown of Karlsruhe, Germany. Ettlinger had never seen it when he lived there as a child–Jews were forbidden to enter the museum.
Ettlinger, along with author Robert Edsel, was a guest at the National Archives this afternoon to mark the donation of Hitler album number 6 to the National Archives.
This album was used by the Nazis to keep track of the art they stole, and was taken by an American soldier as a souvenir when he went into Hitler’s home in the Bavarian Alps. The soldier’s nephew inherited the album, but wasn’t aware of its significance until he met with Edsel, founder of the Monuments Men Foundation.
The National Archives also has custody of the 39 original albums discovered at the Castle of Neuschwanstein. The albums were used as evidence in the Nuremberg trials.

Tea Ceremony [A follow-up to our post on April 21.]
Ten returning residents at Portofino Villas participated in the completion of a project with the Pomona-based American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA): building personalized, ceremonial tea bowls.
Pomona-based American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA) Community Outreach Program Coordinator Jennifer Grace was joined by two volunteers over two Fridays, as residents decorated their glazed bowls and then participated in an impromptu “Tea Offering Ceremony,” appropriate for Earth Day, with EngAGE Regional Programs Director Robin Hart and Site Leader Alma Wright. The last gathering on April 25th was held just before the monthly birthday party at Portofino, so other residents could view and admire the completed tea bowls. ~ Robin Hart, Regional Programs Director

Taking Time to Reflect
On April 21st, Portofino’s ESL class was treated to a welcomed change to commemorate Earth Day. The students were asked to make prayer flags to include a simple painting and message to pass along to their grandchildren and great grandchildren. At first, they were a bit hesitant to try an art project since none of them attend our weekly arts & crafts class, but with a little encouragement they all gave it their best shot. They used acrylic paints on fabric to create an image of their choice, and rubber stamps to write their message. It was a quick, yet meaningful project accomplished in 1 hour and everyone was encouraged to get out of their comfort zone and try something new.

Thokozile Matilda Masipais, 66, is the judge in the Oscar Pistorius trial, which resumed last Monday morning in Pretoria. (Pistorius is accused of murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.) The judge has a long history of seeking justice in South Africa. Read more here.

Mason Currey has written a book about the daily routines of writers, artists, and other creative people. What did he learn?
“One’s daily routine is a highly idiosyncratic collection of compromises, neuroses, and superstitions, built up through trial and error and subject to a variety of external conditions. That said, there are certain behaviors that cropped up over and over again in my research.”
He’s now writing a series of articles on Slate in which he shares some of his discoveries. Entry 1: How novelists, painters, philosophers, and filmmakers find time each day to do their work. Read more here.
