We are saddened by the loss of our colleague and friend, Bobbee Zeno, Founding Producer and Host of Experience Talks. His legacy will live on in the community he loved and served.

In the issue, the model discusses her 70-year long career — she started modeling when she was 13 — and gives some perspective on today’s fashion world. “We’re all works of art in progress. I’m still figuring out how to do the job, and who I am [after 70 years]!”‘

“In 1968, Manhattan’s Museum of Modern Art bought a painting called LOVE and made artist Robert Indiana [85] famous. It became a sculpture, a stamp, greeting cards. And it obliterated the rest of Indiana’s career. The artist has been pretty much ignored by the art world for the past few decades. Not sneered at, he says – just ignored. ‘I wasn’t aware that I was disrespected,’ he says, in a raspy baritone. ‘I’ve only been neglected.'”
But that’s changed. Indiana recently had a career retrospective at the Whitney that has travelled to San Antonio’s McNay (through May 25). Read more about the artist here and at his website.

“While the arts may be good for older people, they may be particularly well suited for the arts. Indeed, some contend that older adults are primed for creative expression in ways that younger people are not. ‘They can focus with laser sharpness, which is really critical to taking up a fine arts form,’ said Francine Toder, a clinical psychologist and author of The Vintage Years: Finding Your Inner Artist (Writer, Musician, Visual Artist) After 60. ‘They can stick with it longer, and they know what frustration is like, so they won’t give up or throw a tantrum like a child will.’ Older people also possess a quality of great value to any artist: wisdom.”

“Legendary South African trumpeter HUGH MASEKELA [75 on April 4th] is an innovator in the world music and jazz scene and continues to tour the world as a performer, composer, producer and activist. This iconic artist is best known for his Grammy-nominated hit single, Grazing in the Grass which sold over 4 million copies in 1968 and made him an international star. He later played an integral role in Paul Simon’s tour behind the classic album Graceland, which was one of the first pop records to introduce African music to a broader public.” Learn more here. Lots of lively activity in January at our communities. In addition to enjoying our usual creative offerings and the invaluable services provided by our HEAL Foodbank and our Social Services coordinators, residents got busy with a Yogalates class and entertainment by Roy the Karaoke Man. Klawitter performers Hedda and fellow-musicians travel from Ireland each year to collaborate with EngAGE to sing traditional Irish songs and tell stories collected from Irish seniors, and gather some from our residents to take home with them.
EngAGE is delighted to be the recipient of a 2014 grant from the Kenneth A. Picerne Foundation which allows us to provide residents with the benefits of two talented teachers: Martha Faghani promotes creativity and inspiration in the visual arts and creative writing by incorporating different art mediums to make personal memoirs, and musician Patrick Berrogain inspires residents to “Unleash Their Composer Within” by using iPads.
