At the age of 89, Burton Kopelow is having his first, long-awaited exhibition at the LA Artcore Brewery Annex, opening on February 2, 2014, with a reception from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Kopelow is a self-taught artist with a large body of work and this retrospective show, which reflects his striking and distinctive abstract style, represents a fraction of his catalogue of over 2,000 pieces. Nearly 100 abstract pieces from the 1970s through today will be on view, ranging from wall-filling works of vibrant, colorful, geometric shapes with touches of irregular tessellation to smaller, more recent works of more organic, free-form abstraction.
In the mid ’70s, in Sacramento, Kopelow codified his artistic vision, influenced heavily by Jung and Theosophy, and began work full time on “Chromorphism,” a series of 29 large canvases, 10 of which will be hung at the LA Artcore show.
Kopelow has since lived in a loft in San Francisco and in the late ’80s became an early resident of the Downtown LA loft scene. Today he lives in Lake Balboa, CA, where he continues to work, despite serious physical disabilities.

We do, too! EngAGE–in walking our talk–is sponsoring a competition for new plays that have something constructive to say about interesting ways of aging, to give hope to younger people and also represent the millions of seniors doing really cool things in their lives.
The winner will have a spot reserved in The Road Theatre‘s annual Summer Playwright Festival This is an eight day fundraising event in late July that mounts 27 staged readings of new plays. The festival is growing larger each year with playwrights from around the country and world participating. Each reading is followed by a talkback with the playwrights, directors, and casts, and a reception featuring live music in our backyard cantina. Competition for selection is stiff as we receive hundreds of submissions. New and established playwrights of any age are encouraged to submit.
Past actors and playwrights have included Craig Wright, Wendy Macleod, Mo Gaffney, Keith Huff, Brett Neveu, Brian Cranston, Kathy Baker, Perry King, Rondi Reed, Michael O’Neill, Harold Gould, and many others.

AYUKO BABU is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Pan African Film Festival (PAFF). The 22nd annual PAFF will be held on February 6-17, 2014, in Los Angeles. The film festival is the nation’s largest and most prestigious Black film festival. Over the years, it has showcased films from all parts of the world, representing such countries as Angola, Austria, England, Bermuda, Canada, Egypt, Ethiopia, Brazil, Kenya, Mexico, South Africa, Nigeria, and of course, the United States. BRIAN SWARTZ is a diverse musician: trumpeter, composer, arranger and producer. His music also has a wide range, from jump swing to funky soul to heartfelt jazz. His band, The Gnu Sextet sprang out of the imagination of trumpeter Swartz in 2005 when the band began its regular Tuesday engagement as the house band at the weekly jam session at the Club 1160 in Hollywood, CA. Swartz sought just the right mix of players that had mastered their respective instruments but were pliable enough to make Swartz’s music their own. What they’ve come up with is a highly personal and intensely expressive style of performance. Since the band has played together since 2005, they have developed a palpable chemistry. In 2008, the band recorded a live DVD at Wave Street Studios in Monterey, California. Swartz’s composition “Down with Downs” was selected as the Grand Prize Winner for the Jazz Category in the 2009 John Lennon Songwriting Contest, Session 1. Learn more at www.BrianSwartz.com.

Mark your calendars, everyone: Next Saturday, January 25, is the annual Museum Free-For-All, which means general admission to many museums around Los Angeles will be free.
The annual event, put on by SoCal Museums, is a way to show Angelenos what many of the museums that are peppered throughout Southern California have to offer. While general admission to all the museums participating in the program is free, added expenses, such as parking and certain exhibitions that require a special ticket to attend, will still be at regular price.
Some of the museums, such as the Getty Center, are already free, and the Hammer Museum is switching over to free admission on Feb. 9, according to the Los Angeles Times. But for many others, this is a great opportunity to experience a multitude of art and culture at many L.A. museums for free

Werner Herzog, 71, is a much-acclaimed German film director, producer, screenwriter, and actor; and an opera director. He is considered one of the greatest figures of the New German Cinema. Queen of the Desert, his latest film, is based on the life of explorer Gertrude Bell and is in production now, starring Nicole Kidman.
In 2010, author Pico Iyer interviewed Herzog as part of a special lecture series at UC Santa Barbara: An Evening with Werner Herzog (2 hours).
