GEORGE M. MARTIN, M.D., is Professor of Pathology Emeritus (Active); Director Emeritus, Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center; Adjunct Professor of Genome Sciences (Retired), University of Washington; and Visiting Scholar, Molecular Biology Institute, UCLA.
Dr. Martin received his BS and MD degrees from the University of Washington and has been a member of its faculty since 1957. For many years, his research has been
concerned with the development of genetic approaches to the study of aging and
age-related diseases in mammals, for which he has received numerous honors.
Dr. Martin is also the Scientific Director of AFAR, the American Federation for Aging Research. AFAR is a national non-profit organization whose mission is to support and advance healthy aging through biomedical research. AFAR is excited to bring its Annual Awards Dinner & Innovations Panel to Los Angeles to celebrate the outstanding contributions of leaders in science, business, and philanthropy to the field of aging on the West Coast. In this conversation with John Semper Jr., Dr. Martin discusses his research and its implications for lengthening not only our life span but also our “health span,” and he explains the valuable work done by AFAR to support both new and established medical researchers. “Hy Snell doesn’t know much about this Internet thing that’s turning him into a national sensation. At age 94, he’s a great-grandfather who is almost blind. He lives at Menorah Park Center for Senior Living in Beachwood (Ohio), and uses a walker to make his way to the art studio — where he proceeds to enjoy himself thoroughly. ‘I’m always making paintings,’ he explains. ‘Without that, I would have a terrible life.'”
“The world is aging so fast that most countries are not prepared to support their swelling numbers of elderly people, according to a global study . . . by the United Nations and an elder rights group. The report ranks the social and economic well-being of elders in 91 countries, with Sweden coming out on top and Afghanistan at the bottom. It reflects what advocates for the old have been warning, with increasing urgency, for years: Nations are simply not working quickly enough to cope with a population graying faster than ever before.” Read more and see a slide show
