Alternative Retirement Living: Cruise Ship

Home-Sweet-Home“Every time a passenger ship leaves port with a guest cabin unoccupied, that’s money the cruise operators are never going to see. . . . The very nature of the cruise business — the relentless competition between various lines, the need to fill those staterooms, a fickle public with a multiplicity of options for how and where to vacation — might cause sleepless nights for executives, but for certain people, it provides a dream scenario: A seldom-considered way to live the ultimate beach-bum fantasy, 21st-century style.” Learn more here about hopping from cruise ship to cruise ship. It’s an unusual retirement strategy! Would it work for you?

International Perspective: Japan’s Economic Crisis

INTERNATIONAL-PERSPECTIVE“‘The working population in Japan is decreasing as the nation is having fewer babies and the population is aging, which will be a crucial factor to weigh on the nation’s growth,’ says Yoshimasa Maruyama, chief economist at trading company Itochu Corp. in Tokyo. . . . Seniors, who are sitting on about 60 percent of all Japanese savings, will have to shoulder a larger share of rising welfare costs, says Susumu Takahashi, chairman of the consulting firm Japan Research Institute.” Read more here about how Japan’s demographic composition will affect both seniors and younger people.

You Can Help Connect Irish/U.S. Elder Theater Groups

Dublin Project

The Arthur Guinness Foundation offers grants “to celebrate and reward the next chapter of Irish talent and creativity.” (Learn more here.) One proposed project would benefit EngAGE and our partner organization, Klawitter Theatre Group. Public voting helps determine which project will get funded. From EngAGE Founder and Executive Director Tim Carpenter:

This project is a collaboration with our theater partners in Dublin (Klawitter Theatre Group) and would create an opportunity for our elder actor/writers to travel there to present on EngAGE programming, and perform monologues and music to theatre companies, other aging organizations, and residents and staff in care homes.

The Burbank Senior Artists Colony has been collaborating with this group by Skype-cast for a few years, creating across-the-pond comedy-dramatic productions such as “The Boyfriend,” a soap opera about an elder lothario practicing his wiles on older dames who stand no chance against his charms. Klawitter also brought a troupe to the states, performing 23 shows in partnership with us here. (Click here and scroll down for details.)

So please go to the Arthur Guinness Projects website below and vote for EngAGE in Creativity as many days as you feel like, through the August 23rd deadline, using this link:

https://www.arthurguinnessprojects.com/arts/engage-in-creativity

Thank you!

(Voting is free and anonymous, but you’ll be asked to verify your age before being taken to the project page to vote.)

Kindertransport 75th Anniversary Reunion

FYI“It’s been 75 years since Kindertransport evacuated 10,000 children from Nazi territory to the safety of England in the eve of the second World War. To commemorate the occasion and the people who saved their lives, some of the 400 surviving members of Kindertransport convened in a Jewish school in London for a reunion (6/23).” Read more and see a video from CNN here. Learn more about the Kindertransport Association here.
