Aging in the Asian-American Community

FYI“Historically, children and grandchildren in Asian families are tasked with taking care of elder generations. But these traditions are being challenged by the modern American context, which pressures children to move out of their households and become independent adults. . . The challenges that face Asian-American elders mirror those that plague senior communities across the country: limited income, lack of access to affordable housing, Home-Sweet-Homedeteriorating health, and a shrinking network of support. But Asian American seniors face additional [challenges] intrinsic of a community that is comprised of so many immigrants. 74% of Asian-American adults were born abroad, according to the Pew Center’s 2012 report on The Rise of Asian-Americans.” Read more here.

A 92-Year-Old Holocaust Survivor Makes a Touching Donation

MUSICThe Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation keeps music alive in our schools by donating musical instruments to under-funded music programs. Generous individual donors provide their beloved instruments when the time seems right. We were touched by Rina Stone’s story:

“The violin belongs to my 92 year old mother, a holocaust survivor.  She played in a youth symphony in Germany before WWII until she was expelled for being Jewish. Although this is not the original violin she played in her youth, it was purchased about 40 years ago when she decided to start playing again and joined a neighborhood orchestra.”

The violin recently found a new home at Santa Ana High School in Santa Ana, CA, only an hour from where she lives! Click here to read more about this story and about Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation.

Lewes, Delaware, Transforms into a Retirement Community

Home-Sweet-Home“In a coastal town where nearly half the residents are over 65, community spirit and cooperation are an inspiration for others.” Click here to read about how the community is planning for future changes and handling the ones they face now in an aging community. Of special interest: the Greater Lewes Community Village.

“The idea is that people join and the organization works to fill their needs, whether it be someone to change a light bulb or shop for groceries for them. The plan is also to have vetted lists of service providers members know they can trust.”

Community Photo Albums: May

May brought a variety of interesting new opportunities to learn and enjoy at our communities, in addition to the usual popular classes and events. There were celebrations for Mother’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, and one in honor of the Fountain Valley firemen, plus an art show opening, a resident-taught genealogy presentation, an informational presentation given by EngAGE about the Home Energy Assistance Program that gives low income seniors a credit to their utility bill, and so much more. Check out the fun in the pictures below. Be sure to see our Community Highlights post today, too. With so much going on, it was hard to choose which ones to feature! (Click on any photo to enlarge it.)
