“The first Mother’s Day was celebrated in 1914, but a holiday honoring fathers did not become official until 1966, when President Lyndon Johnson declared that the third Sunday in June would be Father’s Day. Actress Jeanne K. Russell is best known for playing Dennis’s playmate, Margaret Wade, in the television series “Dennis The Menace,” which was based on the Hank Ketcham comic strip of the same name and aired from 1959 to 1963 on CBS. Russell was chosen at the suggestion of Jay North, who starred in the role of Dennis, to play his nemesis playmate. Russell also appeared in other popular TV shows of the era, including “The Deputy,” “Assignment: Underwater,” “Death Valley Days,” and “The Dinah Shore Show.” She provided a singing voice in the 1961 hit movie “Babes in Toyland,” and made an uncredited appearance as a school child in the classic feature film “The Birds,” directed by Alfred Hitchcock.She has also done live theater and sound track work as well as performing as a singer. In the 1990s, Russell could often be seen on the national talk show and news feature circuit. Russell was also active in the Screen Actors Guild and co-chaired the SAG Young Performers’ Committee for several years.
Since 1978, Russell has been practicing chiropractic medicine in the North Hollywood/Toluca Lake (California) area. She also counsels and coaches patients, assisting them with intuitive eating skills to embrace a healthy lifestyle. Russell has also developed a powerful posture building series of movement and strengthening exercises, which draw from her career in show business and her extensive training in dance.
Andrea Martin, 66, took home a Tony this past weekend for her performance in “Pippin.” She sings “No Time at All,” a song about living life fully right now, and she demonstrates just how well she’s doing that by performing on a trapeze in this circus-themed revival of the show. At an interview prior to the start of the U.S. Open, golfer Tiger Woods cited the importance of Charlie Sifford to the history of golf and in Tiger’s personal life:
“I know my dad probably wouldn’t have picked up the game if it wasn’t for what Charlie did,” Woods said. “I’ve always called him my grandpa, the grandpa I never really had. I’ve gotten to know him through the years and it’s been fantastic. We owe a lot to him and all the pioneers that have paved the way for us to be here.”
Sifford helped desegregate the sport.
“He began caddying as a youngster, earning 60 cents a day. He became the first African-American to earn a PGA Tour card (1960) and was a two-time winner on the regular Tour and was an original member of the PGA Senior Tour, now known as the Champions Tour.”

HONY (Humans of New York)
blog features brilliant street photography by Brandon Stanton. You can follow the photos on the website or on Facebook (our favorite way, as they’re revealed one at a time throughout the day). Here’s how the blog got started:
“My name is Brandon and I began Humans of New York in the summer of 2010. HONY resulted from an idea that I had to construct a photographic census of New York City. I thought it would be really cool to create an exhaustive catalogue of the city’s inhabitants, so I set out to photograph 10,000 New Yorkers and plot their photos on a map. I worked for several months with this goal in mind. But somewhere along the way, HONY began to take on a much different character. I started collecting quotes and short stories from the people I met, and began including these snippets alongside the photographs. Taken together, these portraits and captions became the subject of a vibrant blog, which over the past two years has gained a large daily following. With nearly one million collective followers on Facebook and Tumblr, HONY now provides a worldwide audience with glimpses into the lives of strangers in New York City.”

Willie Herrón III (62) is a well-known artist and the Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles’ official restorer. “He has been working with conservancy since 2012, bringing back some of the city’s Olympic gems from the edges of collective memory and into the windshield purviews of thousands on the Hollywood freeway…Commissioned in 1984, these murals are part of ten pieces created during the Olympic Arts Festival in commemoration of the city hosting the Summer Games. The effort was a milestone in the city’s art history, adding credibility to L.A.’s ‘mural capital of the world’ claim while burnishing sheen on the careers of muralists in the city.” Read more about his efforts here.
