100th Anniversary of The Armory Show
This month marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of an art exhibition in New York City that “shocked the country, changed our perception of beauty and had a profound effect on artists and collectors. The International Exhibition of Modern Art — which came to be known, simply, as the Armory Show — marked the dawn of Modernism in America. It was the first time the phrase ‘avant-garde’ was used to describe painting and sculpture.”

In January, our active seniors were occupied with arts, crafts, computers, exercise, and food (see some tasty food and fine gardens in our Community Highlights post today). There were many other lifelong learning opportunities, too, from studying Shakespeare or jazz to writing poetry and discussing documentary films. Click on any of the pictures below to enlarge it.
Ageless Eyewear Models
Four women, ages between 65 and 92, have been chosen to model the new Karen Walker eyewear collection. Walker, a New Zealand-based designer enlisted the help of photographer Ari Seth Cohen of Advanced Style, to help select and shoot the four fabulous seniors. Read more here. It’s a move often born of financial need or, in some cases, from a desire to keep up a more robust standard of living…experts say there s another motivation for some: companionship.” More here.
How Much Would You Lose if the Social Security COLA Is Changed?
The proposed change to the cost-of-living-adjustment (COLA) for Social Security and veterans’ benefits would result in a combined $129 billion in cuts over the next ten years. This would hurt many seniors and veterans who are already living on tight budgets. AARP has a free calculator that you can use to find out how much your benefits would be reduced over that ten year period of time.
