Charlie Futrell is an exceptional athlete: “On May 14, 2011, Charlie became the first person over 90 years old to complete a USA-Triathlon sanctioned Duathlon with a time of 2:09:07 at the Central Florida Duathlon Series in Clermont, Florida. At the same course on June 11th, Charlie did the full Sprint distance triathlon of a 1/4 mile swim, followed by a 10-mile bike course and 3-mile run, with a time of 2:18:38. The USA Triathlon association believes Charlie is the only person 90-years old to finish officially sanctioned Duathlon and Triathlon races…Charlie [also] has competed in 6 consecutive IronMan® World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. His best finish was in 1992 where he was 3rd in the world for his age group (70-75), and 1st in the U.S. with a time of 15:35:23.” Read more about him here. “The new $36-million central library in Surrey, B.C. is shaking things up with a selection of volunteer ‘living books’ who’ll be loaned out to hold conversations with visitors.
“Librarian Ravi Basi, one of the coordinators of the ‘human library’ program, says the idea originated in Denmark decades ago and has since spread throughout the world.
“Members of the public will be able to have one-on-one conversations for 30 to 45 minutes with [the ‘living books’] in the library itself or one of the facility’s coffee shops.”
While there’s no age requirement to participate in the program, it’s certainly an idea that could take advantage of the knowledge and wisdom that elders have accumulated over the years. Anyone want to approach their local library to see if they’d be interested in starting a similar program?

“Kaye Fallick, publisher of the YourLifeChoices website, which covers retirement, health, wealth, technology and travel issues, says it’s a myth that older people are ‘technologically backward’. A recent survey of 2500 senior Australians by her company shows that 63 per cent of older travellers begin their holiday planning

New South Wales Acts to Get Seniors Online:
“The NSW government is spending $500,000 to turn the state’s grannies and grandpas into a generation of connected, tech-savvy computer whizzes. ‘We want to see more tech-savvy seniors, we want to see people understanding and utilising technology,’ NSW Minister for Ageing Andrew Constance told reporters in Sydney.” Read more here.
