Maureen Kellen-Taylor Celebrates Ten Years with EngAGE

On May 1, 2012, we celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Maureen Kellen-Taylor joining the EngAGE team. Maureen has dedicated herself to making EngAGE a national leader in high-end programs for older adults. She is our heart and soul, and we thank her. Maureen Kellen-Taylor, Phd, Chief Operating Officer – Dr. Kellen-Taylor has worked in the field of Arts and Aging for over 25 years, during which she was Founding Director of Artworks in San Francisco – another exemplary organization recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts – where she received Artist in Residence awards from the California Arts Council for 5 years. She earned an MA in Expressive Arts Therapy and a PhD for conducting research in Learning and Change in Human Systems. Dr. Kellen-Taylor taught in Lifelong Learning programs for several colleges for more than twelve years and also integrated the arts into elementary and middle school curriculum when working as artist-in-residence in San Francisco Public Schools. In 2003 she was invited to be a Resident Artist at Boreal Arts and Ecology Center, Quebec, Canada, to continue her explorations in art, nature and spirituality through environmental installations. In 2005 she received the Directors Award from the California Arts Council for a life time commitment to the arts. She has exhibited paintings in England and the US.

Tim Carpenter to Speak at Council on Foundations Annual Conference in Los Angeles

Tim Carpenter, Founder and Executive Director of EngAGE, and Mark Freedman, Founder and CEO of Civic Ventures, will present a session at the 2012 Council on Foundations Annual Conference in Los Angeles entitled The Boomer Explosion: A Creative Look at Aging and Communities:

How will communities respond to the 78 million Americans who will be over the age of 65 by 2030?  This session will address what boomers need, what they are looking for, and how nonprofit service organizations can respond.

International Perspective: Canadian Technology That Helps Seniors Bounce Back from Falls

INTERNATIONAL-PERSPECTIVE“Falls are the leading cause of injury hospitalizations among Canadians 65 and  older, with one in three expected to suffer a tumble this year.

“But as more people delay retirement, staying on the job into their 70s or  later, researchers are working on innovations. These inventions will in the  years to come, help older employees bounce HEALTHback – literally – from falls and  other workplace perils.

“From offices with flex-floors to injectable heart monitors and mobile  medication alerts, experts predict our job sites could one day come to offer a  standard of safety approaching that of a care facility.”

Tim Carpenter, Founder and Executive Director of EngAGE, shared his vision of what a senior apartment community should be like at a recent event sponsored by the 55+ Housing Council. The Council provides networking, education and partnering prospects for Southern California professionals involved in every aspect of housing specifically for 55+ markets including active adult, age-targeted, senior condos, 55+ apartments, CCRCs, Assisted Living, Alzheimer’s care and more. This week: Talk Story: Democracy – Part Two

As Mark Twain said, “Men write many fine and plausible arguments in support of monarchy, but the fact remains that where every person has a voice, brutal laws are impossible.”  On this week’s program you’ll hear part two of our two part series that shares stories told by older adults in Southern California who participated in the Talk Story: Democracy program. Funded by the California Council for the Humanities, Talk Story: Democracy was a storytelling class offered by the non-profit EngAGE that taught older adults to write and present personal stories about democracy. The stories focus on the perspective gained by people who come from other countries to experience freedom for the first time later in life.

Talk Story is a program delivered by the non-profit EngAGE, catalyzing older adults to write and perform true stories from their lives.  Onsite classes at senior apartment communities teach seniors writing and performing skills, preparing them to perform in community staged readings and on the Experience Talks radio show. This week’s show was produced by Deborah Pardes and Alicia Sedwick, and all the music was created by Deborah Pardes.
