Understanding Hoarding

“Inside E Street” is devoting a show to the problem of hoarding. In Los Angeles, it can be seen on KCET at 9:30 PM on Friday, October 28th. Here’s the synopsis:

HEALTHHoarding is a growing phenomenon that particularly affects older adults. It’s a mental illness manifested behind closed doors but it is increasingly getting more public attention. Cities and towns are concerned about this public health issue that poses a danger to the hoarder, firefighters and community. Treatment is difficult and there is no cure. We all enjoy having stuff, but when is it too much? Host: Lark McCarthy. Guests include: Randy Frost, Professor of Psychology at Smith College, co-author of Stuff: Compulsive Hoarding and the Meaning of Things; Cynthia Lester, Documentary Filmmaker and Director of My Mother’s Garden.

Make Do and Mend

With the economy in such trouble and people struggling to make ends meet, it might be time to consider adopting the suggestions in this 2:45 British film from the Ministry of Supply. “How to Make Do and Mend” presents an exhibition arranged by the Board of Trade in Harrods Store in London in 1943 to demonstrate “substitution and conversion” economies. There’s a fashion show with models wearing patchwork and reworked clothing. Less elegant but no less practical is an improvised cot for a baby: a sack stretched between two chairs!

News from Burbank Senior Artists Colony: “The Boyfriend” – L.A. to London!

Burbank Senior Artist Colony actors have been collaborating for months on an improv piece called “The Boyfriend.” The first chapter was birthed at BSAC, the second, a response, in London with David Slater of Entelechy Arts and his troupe of actors. We all met via Skype to brainstorm the third act. And early on Tuesday morning, 10/25, the Burbank folks will perform the finale live via Skype on a large screen at a big annual event in London! Presidential Citizens Medal

FYIEngAGE congratulates 2011 Presidential Citizens Medal award winners Elizabeth and Stephen Alderman, founders of the Peter C. Alderman Foundation, which establishes mental health clinics around the world for victims of rape and other forms of extreme violence, and Dr. Judith Broder, creator of The Soldiers Project, which provides free, unlimited counseling to veterans and their families.  Tune in here today at 1:45 p.m. EDT to watch the award ceremony live at the White House.

For more than 40 years, the Presidential Citizens Medal has honored Americans who have “performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens.” Past winners have included some of America’s most respected public figures as well as everyday heroes committed to helping their fellow citizens.

This year, President Obama asked the public to submit nominees, hoping to recognize exemplary citizens and local heroes who have significantly impacted their communities but who may not have garnered national attention.

More Older Adults Now Using Facebook & Other Social Media

Inner Life Of NumbersThe Atlantic reports  that “more and more elderly adults, including some centenarians, are learning how to use Facebook and other social networking sites to maintain relationships with family and friends and prevent loneliness and depression.” The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project reports that “the 74-plus demographic is the fastest growing demographic among social networks.”
