There is a perception in the West that Asian cultures respect their elders and care for them in extended family living situations. While there is some truth to that assumption, reality does not always conform to our expectations. This week members of the Alliance for Retired Americans sponsored a series of events nationwide to let their lawmakers know how much working people depend on Medicare and Social Security. Last month was the 46th anniversay of the establishment of Medicare and August 14th marked the 76th anniversary of the establishment of Social Security. On Tuesday, demonstrators in downtown Los Angeles showed their support for the programs.

Our Oldest Volunteer Helps Out with Second Harvest Delivery
at The Grove in Garden Grove!
Jim Gray is an amazing guy. He makes a conscious effort to help out within his community on a regular basis. This may not seem so remarkable a feat, but Jim is at an age where most of society considers him in need—he’s 93. Jim and several other residents at The
Grove get together twice a month to unpack pallets of free food from the Second Harvest program that recently came to Garden Grove, through the efforts of EngAGE. Resident volunteers package the food into individual parcels for pickup by residents.
Longevity research points to community involvement as a substantial factor in living a long and happy life. What else does Jim do on a regular basis that is considered a factor in longevity? He gets out of the house to golf– every day!

Grandparent’s Day Celebration a Big Hit at Heritage Park Anaheim!
About 30 residents, kids and grandkids converged on the clubhouse last week at Heritage Park Anaheim for an impromptu summer celebration. Grandkids got the opportunity to listen to what their grandparents did during the long summer days of the past—before there were personal computers, cell phones and electronic games to occupy one’s time!
Everyone enjoyed a meal, face-painting, the decoration of drums that were later used during a drum circle and a norteño-style music performance by the grandsons of a HPA resident. There were door prizes as well—when one 6-yearold started to cry because he didn’t get the prize he hoped for, a seven-year old came over, hugged him and gave him half of his door prize! Residents were given photos of their family, printed on-site, and placed in a commemorative card.
