Two of the five concerts CalArts presented last week at REDCAT were conducted by and featured the work of Russian/Tartar composer Sofia Gubaidulina. Then she moved on to the Los Angeles Philharmonic, which included her 2008 concerto, “Glorious Percussion,” as part of Gustavo Dudamel’s “Brahms Unbound” festival. Fine accomplishments for anyone, but especially noteworthy for EngAGE Blog readers because Ms. Gubaidulina will be eighty years old in October. Read more at the LA Times Culture Monster blog here.

News from Burbank Senior Artists Colony
Exciting news for BSAC writers: Poets & Writers, Inc. of New York have funded a six-week Poetry Tool-Box with Hannah Menken to start at BSAC in June. Poets & Writers is the nation’s largest non-profit organization serving creative writers.

What Does It Feel Like to be Old?
NPR reporter Jennifer Ludden tried on a special suit developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology AgeLab to find out what physical problems most older people have to cope with daily. It was an eye-opening experience for her.
“[The suit] is meant to help 20-something engineers feel the aches and limitations of an average 75-year-old so they can design better products for them. Think of it as working like those outfits Superheroes put on, only backward.”

Residents at Solara Court enjoyed participating in a small craft project. They took two pieces of glass, decorated each piece and then taped them together with copper tape. Beautiful results! A small project with big impact.

Writers and Typewriters
There’s a certain sense of romance that surrounds the image of a writer hard at work at a typewriter. But now, the typewriter has faded from the scene, replaced by a rather less romantic image of a writer staring at a computer screen.
