The American Society on Aging held its National Conference in San Francisco last week. Maureen Kellen-Taylor attended as a member of a panel on “Housing Innovations and Emerging Trends: Non-conventional Models to Match Boomers’ Wants and Needs.” She presented the Burbank Senior Artists Colony and also mentioned the North Hollywood and Long Beach Senior Arts Colonies which are currently being built.
Last night [5/2], Alice Hope, a participant in the Talk Story writing classes at Triangle Square presented a story to a full house at The Powerhouse Theatre in Santa Monica.
Hers was the last in an evening of true stories with a Weather Theme in the Spark Off Rose Series. It was titled “A Port in Any Storm.”
She held the audience in thrall as she recounted the highs and lows of a 45-year-long
relationship. Several young students from the Art Institute were present in the audience and said that Alice’s story was their favorite.

We’re fortunate to have many fine museums in the Los Angeles area. The Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary, holds an excellent collection of Asian and Pacific Island art. It also boasts an active group of volunteers, including the most senior volunteer, Lady Harrington.
Lady Harrington, a UCLA graduate in the field of Archeology and a pilot, has documented hieroglyphs in a cave in Guatemala and now helps document the inventory of the museum. Read more here.

Residents at Piedmont Senior Apartments enjoyed several interesting events recently:
The South Coast Air Quality Board invited Piedmont residents to attend a full day of environmental health workshops held at Cal State Northridge with lunch and transportation provided. Twenty-seven residents participated.
Two “Fresh & Easy Healthy Cooking Workshops with Aren” allowed twenty-three Piedmont residents to experience cooking simple recipes with techniques provided by a trained volunteer chef. “He taught us how to make vegetarian chili and it was really good! I’m going to start cooking healthy now,” shared a workshop attendee. Aren was a student intern who offered to return and work in EngAGE programs.
And Geezers, a film by Rubber Tree Productions was shot on location at
the apartment complex. Thirty Piedmont seniors acted and appeared in this up-and-coming feature film. All were abuzz and proud to be part of the production. “Can you believe the movie bug bit me at 80!” said Victoria, an excited resident.

The Huffington Post has posted several fascinating, very short films made in Ireland by the Mitchell & Kenyon film company:
“There’s a bit of YouTube to the 100-year-old film clips that emerged back in 1995 from barrels in English basement. They’re short, unscripted, a little rough around the edges, the stars were regular people and, in what would pass for 4G speed in 1900, they would be shot in the afternoon and screened that same evening. But unlike digital media, they weren’t supposed to live forever, given the unstable and highly flammable nature of the nitrate film stock.”
