News from ACE/121: Gallery Exhibiting Artists + After School Program

From ACE/121 in Glendale, CA: Creating a better understanding of ace/121 as a community and growing our intergenerational collaborations are two of our outreach goals. Accordingly, we encourage exhibiting artists (resident and non-resident) to visit the After School Program, operated by the neighboring YMCA, and offer free classes to the participating children. It is a fantastic way for the artists to engage more directly with the ace/121 community and for the kids to feel a connection to the gallery and its exhibitions. In this way, it creates a collaboration between generations, introduces young people to professional working artists, and creates bridges between the diverse spaces in the ace/121 community  such as the gallery, residences, and community areas.

Melly Trochez and Leo Eguiarte, exhibiting artists at the ace/121 Gallery, visit the After School program to instruct the participants in collage making and screen printing. They made self-portraits and holiday cards for their families.

EngAGE connects across generations, helping older adults become involved with younger people in their communities as mentors, sages, and neighbors.

News from Flower Park Plaza: Watercolors

Budding artists at Flower Park Plaza in Santa Ana, CA, explored their creative side using watercolors to create a botanical painting. Even though watercolors were new to them, after some initial practice they were able to understand how to use the proper proportion of water to paint when blending colors and pigments together. Everyone walked out with a picture they were very proud of!

The previous month, residents celebrated a seasonal theme using acrylic paint. Some were surprised at their excellent finished work! (Click on any thumbnail to enlarge it.)

Research demonstrates that participating in arts activities improves the health and quality of life of older people.

News from NoHoSAC: Creativity at All Ages

Once a month the Boys & Girls Club of Burbank and Greater East Valley gather up their art supplies and visit the NoHo Senior Arts Colony in North Hollywood, CA, where they get artistic advice from our sage NoHoSAC artists. Under the tutelage of their art teacher, the young students worked in the NoHoSAC art studio, first drawing their outlines in pencil, then adding color and texture with acrylic paints. Their canvases came to life with high tech Transformers, cherry blossom branches, and a pair of luminous pop art-esque eyes. This field trip, part of the After School Education and Safety Program (ASES), is fully funded by the Boys & Girls Club and allows for intergenerational socialization and promotes hands-on creativity—for all ages.

Left: Encouragement from NoHo resident and painter, Cyrena. Right: Drawing a Transformer from the Internet.

Left: Next step is adding the cherry blossoms. Right: The Eye has it!

News from Portofino: Cold Weather and Warm Hats

The holiday activities at Portofino Villas in Pomona, CA, began with an invitation from Euclid Elementary School in Ontario, CA, asking the Crochet Club to attend their December 5th Family Reading Night. The Crochet Club had been hard at work since October creating colorful hand knitted beanies for children, and the school’s event was the perfect occasion to share them! A total of 76 beanies were made and donated by the residents to the Euclid Elementary children. It was a night full of joy, excitement, and gratitude from the kids, their teachers and parents. One week after the event, the Crochet Club received a huge and beautiful handmade poster made of thank-you cards from the children.  Their gratitude touched the residents’ hearts deeply.

News from Tavarua: Craft and Cookies

Tavarua Holiday Craft

Girlfriends Care, a volunteer group of women from Carlsbad, CA, visited Tavarua Senior Apartments in Carlsbad, CA. Girlfriends Care connects volunteers to meaningful outreach projects and offers a smorgasbord of opportunities in the San Diego area.

The group provided Tavarua residents with a holiday crafting experience, making cute snowmen ornaments and decorating gift bags. Each resident made 2 to 3 ornaments and all were excited to give the gifts to their loved ones during the holiday season.

Gingerbread Cookie Decorating

Tavarua residents decorated holiday cookies for a yummy treat. They used frosting, sprinkles, and candies to make their own version of a gingerbread man. Each cookie was taken home to enjoy later or given away to share.
