JAMES CHIAO
MIRABAI BUSH
with host DR. CONNIE CORLEY

JAMES CHIAO was born in Guangzhou, China, in 1949, one of three sons of the famous Chinese composer Fei Chiao, who is most known for his Chinese folk songs, “The Moonlight” and “Early Spring in Mountain Village.” James grew up during China’s Cultural Revolution. During this turbulent time, many intellectuals and musicians were persecuted and treated unfairly. As his own family had a musical background, James was sent to the countryside for six years, where he farmed the land and roamed the waters as a fisherman.

In 1980, he immigrated to United States, living in Los Angeles. Through hard work and determination, he found his wife, started a family, and built a successful business, CNL Mannequins, selling mannequins to major department stores, such as Macy’s. Although he had achieved the American Dream, he still felt like something was missing in his life.

In 2017, James graduated from CalArts at age 68, earning his MFA in the music program. As part of his program, he created his own musical, Mannequin Man by Day, Tenor by Night. It premiers at the El Portal Theater in North Hollywood, CA, September 22nd—23rd + two shows added on the 25th and 26th.  Tickets are available online or call the Box Office: 818-508-4200

MIRABAI BUSH is Senior Fellow and founder of the Center on Contemplative Mind in Society, which encourages contemplative practice and perspective in American life in order to create a more just, compassionate, and reflective society. Mirabai has also worked with Google on a workplace course called “Search Inside Yourself,” and with the US Army on a program for chaplains and medics, as well as with many other organizations. She formerly directed the Seva Foundation Guatemala Project, which supports sustainable agriculture and integrated community development. Learn more on her website.

Mirabai Bush is co-author of the book, Contemplative Practices in Higher Education: Powerful Methods to Transform Teaching and Learning, and she created the CD entitled Working with Mindfulness. In addition to being co-author with Ram Dass of Compassion in Action: Setting Out on the Path of Service, their latest collaboration, published by Sounds True, is called Walking Each Other Home: Conversations on Love and Dying.
