Art classes provide an opportunity for residents to explore their creativity through various mediums. The Kenneth A. Picerne Foundation and EngAGE teamed to provide Art and Creativity to Cotton’s Point residents for the entire year of 2015.
Picerne Foundation Art Instructor Susie Stockholm: “As we enter the last few months of the program. I wanted the regular students to choose how they wanted to spend their collage-making time. So I brought 3 collage books with ideas. Everyone loved looking at the books. When I showed the large paper they would be collaging on, there was a bit of hesitation as this is the biggest they have done so far, but after they got started tearing out images, they were excited. The iPad class moved along pretty quickly since they had all practiced during the week opening and closing the books and pages, as well as bringing up the brush palette. In collage class today, I held up each person’s work and we spent about ½ hour talking about the elements of art, what their struggles were with the big piece, how they got side-tracked and what needed to happen next. Learning to not rush, take time, build layers is challenging. When we talked about everyone’s piece, the comments were what I’d hoped. That things got more interesting when time was taken, layers built up, and surprises happened.”
