Judith Weir to Become Master of the King’s/Queen’s Music

MUSICFrom the Classical KUSC Facebook announcement: “Meet the new Master. The Sunday Times of London reports that Judith Weir CBE [60]will become the first female Master of the King’s/Queen’s Music in the nearly 400 years of the position [a role described as the musical equivalent of poet laureate]. She succeeds Peter Maxwell Davies, who was the first Master to be limited to a ten-year tenure. The post has always been a lifetime appointment, or until the next monarch. Past Masters include John Stanley, William Boyce, Edward Elgar, Arnold Bax and Arthur Bliss. The Royal Household has not commented on the report, which has been picked up by most major news outlets in the UK, and is likely to officially announce the next Master of the Queen’s Music in about a month.” Click here to listen to Judith Weir’s String Quartet. Read her bio here.
