Saturday, 8/23 at 8 AM PT: Peter G. Lancellotti and Yvonne Beatty talk with host Cynthia Friedlob
Both of our guests have made radical changes in their professional lives, leaving their original careers to move on to something completely different for their encore careers. Peter Lancellotti spent 20 years in the telecommunications industry, then left it to get a degree in Gerontology and launch a senior health care service primarily for the LGBT community. Yvonne Beatty spent 28 years in nursing and public health, then went back to college for a master’s degree in fine art and a career as an artist. The enthusiasm both of our guests have for their current work is evidence of just how satisfying an encore career can be.
While serving as a University of Southern California gerontologist, PETER LANCELLOTTI decided to put his clinical research on aging into practice by launching a Seniors Helping Seniors franchise, a non-medical home care service matching seniors seeking employment with seniors who need help to continue living independently in their own homes. Non-medical services provided include such things as cooking, light housekeeping, yard work, pet walking, shopping, transportation, small repairs, and companionship. Peter’s franchise, based in West L.A., focuses primarily, but not exclusively, on serving the LGBT senior community, a group that has special needs and is currently underserved. More information on his website.
YVONNE BEATTY is an accomplished fine artist who has exhibited at various Southern California venues, including Angels Gate Cultural Center, the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, and UC San Diego. Her work was part the 62nd Annual United Nations DPI/NGO Conference in Mexico City and she has had a solo exhibition in the offices of the President of the Board of Supervisors at San Francisco City Hall. Ms. Beatty has also taught art to disadvantaged children in Compton, CA. She is currently at work on a new project: curating the upcoming Harlem Renaissance West exhibit at the Museum of African American Art in the Baldwin Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles. The exhibit was conceived by Ms. Beatty as a way to explore the changes in African American art since the days of the Harlem Renaissance. It is scheduled to open on January 18, 2015 and will run for three months. Exhibiting artists will be Yvonne Beatty, Buena Johnson, Miriam Moore, Phyllis Miller, Doug Pearsall, Karl Jean Petion, Dr. Sidonie Smith, and Karien Zachery. Learn more about Yvonne at her website and get the details about Harlem Renaissance West on her News Page.
