Artistic EquipmentUntil last year when Jeff Koons beat the record, Gerhard Richter was the most expensive living artist at auction (“Cathedral Square, Milan” had sold for $37 million). “But Mr. Richter, 82, remains conflicted about his superstar status. In a rare interview, he said he worried that high auction figures give him the appearance of ‘conning’ people. He believes these prices detract from the purpose of a top-notch artist: offering a spiritual substitute to religion in an increasingly secular world.” Read an interview here.
