The Kenneth A. Picerne Foundation and EngAGE teamed to provide Art and Creativity classes to Cotton’s Point residents for all of 2015.
Picerne Artist/Art Class Instructor Susie Stockholm: We’re continuing work on our cubist-style drawings. They are a bit challenging in that one must look carefully at the detail. Which lines intersect? Which ones need to be completed to make the shape? Where should each color go? We took some time to show off the collages again, and I took pictures of each of them. Everyone was really tickled with how the cubist paintings turned out. We started on the new assignment, which was to use the eraser as a drawing tool. We created shapes with graphite pencils, then erased to bring out interesting shapes. This is also an interesting exercise to do on the iPad in Paper 53. They all loved this drawing with graphite lesson, and the electric eraser makes such fun designs.
Photo editing was addressed, too. The class re-learned how to open/edit/crop a photo. Next we imported a photo into Procreate. The color wheel lesson was well-received. They created a monochrome color palette, then painted with just those colors.
Creativity Class provides an opportunity for residents to explore their creativity through various mediums. This class supplements and compliments the Art Class, providing an alternate teacher, day, and time for creative expression. This month’s topics included collage paper art using various fall print papers, how to make 3D creations using paper, ways to communicate with old friends through art, painting fall images using stencils, and shading your figures to create a 3D appearance.
Creativity Class Instructor Jennifer Fallon: I pulled out some fall magazines to facilitate our project. Residents said how much they like to color in their adult coloring books in their apartments. They find that it stimulates their minds, as well as makes time go by more quickly. In class, they improvised by creating autumn cards using holiday art paper, and helped each other by creating stencil leaves out of cardboard.
