Sterling Court: Gardening, Art, and Halloween Fun

Archstone -logoArchstone Foundation funded Second Harvest to provide Community Gardens to some of the properties to which they currently provide food.  Gratefully, Sterling Court is one of five EngAGE properties that receive free services, including a monthly Master Gardener on site, soil, fertilizer, seedlings, tools, and gloves. This is an organic, edible, community garden. Raised planters were built on site.  Regional Programs Director Meloney Morse: Gardeners planted their winter crops and are looking forward to harvesting new foods and spices. One resident commented that she wants to plant winter squash and make autumn soup with it.

2015_10-SC-2Art Class instructor Nicole Garlardo: We finished up still life paintings with details like background and shadows to show special relations. This student had a vision to do flowers and a girl smelling the flowers. She worked on that at home, and came to class to work and for critique.  We developed a collage of resident photos from EngAGE programming.  We also made a colorful border on poster-board of many patterns. We used markers, pen, color pastels, and crayon. Then we placed the pictures in the center to display in community room.

Site Leader Nicole Galarado reports that last month’s Halloween Potluck had a nice atmosphere, with Halloween decorations throughout the community room, and a DJ providing great music. There was a pumpkin decorating contest with four participants and everyone took a prize home. Everyone also danced a bit — several residents even did the Cupid Shuffle!
