Lula Washington Dance Theatre presents its 2017 Kwanzaa Festival – two days of high velocity dancing and drumming, mixing African Dance, modern dance, cultural dance forms, and ballet in unforgettable ways. The celebration features a blending of Lula Washington’s youth dancers and the professional members of her world-famous international touring company.
This is a cultural holiday celebration, not a religious holiday observance. Lula’s program illuminates the seven principals of Kwanzaa, all of which advocate the development of families, children, communities, and individual well being. This is a family-friendly performance for adults and children alike. The youth dancers often steal the show!

The performances are held in Lula Washington’s dance studio, 3773 Crenshaw Boulevard, LA CA 90016 in South Los Angeles. Parking is free in the LWDT parking lot.

Lowell Steward, former President of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, received a business degree from Santa Barbara College in 1941, then joined the Army Air Corps. He trained at the Tuskegee Army Airfield in Alabama.
In 1944, he was sent off to Italy with the famed all-black unit’s 100th Fighter Squadron where he flew more than 100 combat missions. At the end of WWII, Captain Lowell Steward was given the Distinguished Flying Cross.
However, despite the unit’s and his own impressive war records, Steward returned to a segregated United States, where he was denied a mortgage for a home because he was black. He responded by getting a real estate license so he could help others in the same situation. He studied while working as a railway baggage porter, then went on to have a successful 40-year career as one of the first black real estate brokers in Los Angeles County.
