At The Metro at Hollywood Senior Apartments, Art Class gives residents the opportunity to express themselves through art. Instructor Polet wants residents to learn “to see” as they work on their paintings. She wants them to see how depth is created in a painting by using values of color; foreground, middleground, and background; and detail. Rather than asking what to do next, Polet encourages residents to “look to see,” observe closely the different parts of the painting, and then learn how to do it.
This recent ESL Class was about learning to understand the function of prepositions. Residents got familiar with the common ones, and instructor Polet wanted residents to know that there is sometimes more than one preposition that can be used to make a statement. Using general dialogues, such as “shopping scenes,” is very helpful for the students when practicing conversation and pronunciation.
