Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Workshop

Residents at The Piedmont welcomed residents from the Burbank Senior Artists Colony and the North Hollywood Senior Arts Colony to share in an exciting workshop provided by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

Nasha Thomas, former company member and current National Director of AileyCamp / Spokesperson & Master Teacher for Arts Education, provided some context for the dance movements they would be learning which would be accompanied by music from Revelations, Mr. Ailey’s signature ballet. The ballet has been in the company’s repertory since its creation in 1960, and over 23 million people in 71 countries have seen it. It’s more than just a popular dance work; it has become a cultural treasure, beloved by generations of fans.

Nasha her team began by making the group comfortable with movement. Dancers Aaron and Rachel led residents through a variety of dance movements, with percussionist Jackson providing the rhythm.

And they’re dancing! Below, Nasha and Aaron demonstrate steps and the residents join in.

Rachel, Nasha, and Aaron bring more of the crowd to their feet.

The residents learn the final dance combinations.

And here they are dancing to “Rocka My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham,” a song featured in the ballet, Revelations!

Following the workshop, the BSAC, NoHo SAC, and Piedmont residents chatted happily over pizza and soft drinks provided by EngAGE, and topped off by yet another delectable cake baked by Piedmont resident Nicholas.

EngAGE is grateful to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and the Los Angeles Music Center for giving our residents this unique and memorable experience!
