This week: Talk Story Democracy, Part One

As Mark Twain said, “Men write many fine and plausible arguments in support of monarchy, but the fact remains that where every person has a voice, brutal laws are impossible.”  On this week’s program: stories of democracy and freedom.  You’ll hear part one of a two part series that shares stories told by older adults in Southern California who participated in the Talk Story: Democracy program. Funded by the California Council for the Humanities, Talk Story: Democracy was a storytelling class offered by the non-profit EngAGE that taught older adults to write and present personal stories about democracy. The stories focus on the perspective gained by people who come from other countries to experience freedom for the first time later in life.

Talk Story is a program delivered by the non-profit EngAGE, catalyzing older adults to write and perform true stories from their lives.  Onsite classes at senior apartment communities teach seniors writing and performing skills, preparing them to perform in community staged readings and on the Experience Talks radio show. This week’s show was produced by Deborah Pardes and Alicia Sedwick, and all the music was created by Deborah Pardes.  Part two of this special series will be broadcast on April 21st.
