Join us this year on September 29th at Cerritos Park East for another day of competition and fun! The Senior Olympics are open to residents of all of the properties served by EngAGE. Friends and relatives are encouraged to volunteer their help with staging the games and to come by to cheer on their favorite teams and competitors. What: Created and managed by EngAGE, Inc., the Senior Olympics is an annual Fall event that provides a healthful, outdoor experience to seniors in the spirit of athletic competition. EngAGE is a nonprofit that takes a whole-person approach to creative and healthy aging by providing arts, wellness, lifelong learning, community building and intergenerational programs to thousands of seniors living in affordable senior apartment communities in Southern California.
When: Saturday, September 29, 2012
Where: For the 2012 event, all competitive events will be held at the spacious 32-acre Cerritos East Regional Park and Community Center in Cerritos, California.
Who: Low to moderate income seniors from twenty-two residential facilities located from San Bernardino to Hollywood, Orange County to Sylmar.
Why: The Senior Olympics was created as an extension of EngAGE, Inc.’s mission to provide opportunities for creativity, learning, and wellness for residents living in affordable senior apartment communities.
What are the outdoor events? Seniors at the various facilities sign up to compete in games such as the Ring Fling, the Free Throw, Kick to Target, and the ever-popular Walking event, with contestants entered in heats of age ranges from under 60 to over 81. Contestants vie for individual awards and points, resulting in the Olympic Championship awarded to the residential facility accumulating the highest number of points.
Are there other activities and events? The day begins with an Opening Ceremony and Parade of Champions inside the community center. There is also a competitive arts and crafts display and a performing arts competition, all wrapped up by the end-of-day Awards Presentation.
How many participants are there? For the 2012 Senior Olympics, over 300 residents are expected to compete. Many more staff, volunteers, friends and family will there to support and cheer on the athletes.
