Featured Resident Artist: Kailas Dave, Burbank Senior Artists Colony

We have many talented, creative residents living in our EngAGE communities. Here’s one from BSAC.

Kailas Dave
Artist: Watercolors class, Sketching/Painting class, Clay Jewelry class/teacher

I always liked to draw and create art from about the age of eight or nine.

On my sixteenth birthday, my father bought me an art supply set which included watercolor paint and some brushes. I experimented but did not find that it was so easy. So I joined classes for one or two months. However, after finishing high school, I attended a science college and I had no time to attend art classes.

What I had learned did prove useful.  I drew botanical and zoological specimens and later I participated in a biology exhibition where I painted animals and plants.

I entered medical school at the age of eighteen. There I drew more and managed to do some color pencil renditions of human anatomy, pathology specimens, and so on. But no real water colors were used.

During my summer vacations and when ever got time, I did return to painting.

Later, I did my residency in Pediatrics. I worked In India, my birth country, and moved to England as a Pediatrician. My work there was busy, too.

I moved to USA in 1984 where I was required to do my residency again after certain passing necessary examinations. I had to pass my Board exams, while working as a Pediatrician.  I also was raising two children, which left me very little time for any artistic pursuits.

After forty years of working as a practicing pediatrician, I retired and moved to Burbank in 2014.

When I found out about the art classes offered at the BSAC like watercolor paintings, I was delighted and joined different classes. At one stage I had the opportunity to teach drawing to the other residents of the colony. I’ve also enjoyed classes in jewelry and have taken part in plays as well.

Besides watercolor paintings, I’ve also begun to learn oil painting in the past year. I have completed about ten to twelve oil paintings by now. Some have been displayed in exhibitions conducted by the Burbank Art Association and Burbank Artists Colony shows.

I hope I continue to paint and create crafts for activity and enjoyment. It keeps my brain active and makes me feel good! I love the classes at BSAC they have brought me so much joy and creativity.

News from North Hollywood Senior Arts Colony: Colony Choir Debut

The inaugural North Hollywood Senior Arts Colony choir made its debut on May 25 at a community potluck, performing in diverse styles and featuring multiple soloists. Opening with the traditional song, “When the Saints Go Marching In,” the group continued to honor classic American music with a rendition of “Side By Side” that showcased Carol Egen on kazoo and Michael Hertz on kazoo and jug. Leonard Cohen’s beautiful ballad, “Hallelujah,” featured solos by G. Martin Green and Essie Neff, followed by the swinging jazz standard, “Fly Me to the Moon,” sung by powerhouse Darrell Pugh. Carol Egen’s captivating performance of “Who Can I Turn To” earned rapt applause, and the choir responded with an a cappella presentation of the sacred song, “Dona Nobis Pacem,” Latin for ‘grant us peace.’ To conclude the program, choir director Angela Vicente invited everyone in the room to join in singing “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” the final notes resounding gloriously amongst the entirety of those gathered therein.

News from ACE/121: Ernie Silva at Antaeus Theater 6/19

Ernie is an ACE/121 resident! Get tickets here. Watch a 3-minute teaser here.

“Heavy Like the Weight of a Flame” is a sea-green version of the blues! It’s a one-man show that is like watching a bar fight go on between our lead character’s demons, influences, and aspirations. It’s a sometimes serious, sometimes hilarious journey filled with echoes of Shakespeare, Lightning Hopkins, Jack Kerouac, and your local Brooklyn New York archetypes and philosophers. It’s raw, it’s funny, it is universally human, and it is above all intelligent!

This show walks the spiritual alleyways previously stomped through by people like John Leguizamo in “Freak” and Danny Hoch in “Jails, Hospitals and Hip-Hop,” but with an extra element not even found in those two pieces, the enthralling ingredient added by Savannah, our main character’s beloved guitar! Accompanying Silva’s verbal eloquence, from her mouth come voices ranging from the likes of Jimi Hendrix to Andres Segovia, not to mention his own very distinct music. The show is unquestionably not your average thing, it is a New York street kid’s walking, talking proof that high concept tales are also found in broken yet crystal clear street poetry! That same type of heart-filled imagery that can be found enrapturing minds within the writings of Donald Goines just as easily as it can be seen gripping souls when found screaming in a subway, or anywhere you happen to be lucky enough to catch this one of a kind artwork!

“Heavy” has enjoyed a myriad of successes both in the states and internationally. The show has enjoyed full productions in Los Angeles, New York, Scotland, London, Manchester, and Amsterdam and has been met with both statewide and international acclaim.

About the Artist

A native of Bushwick projects in Brooklyn New York, early on it became obvious that Ernie’s innate abilities for dramatic acting, guitar playing, and stand-up comedy would find some perfect union and form a magical link which “Heavy” puts on full display.

Ernie’s academic life has also been a range of successes. First, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Acting from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. To build even further, he later added on a Master’s Degree in Acting from the University of Southern California’s Graduate Acting program in 2009. It was during his time at USC that Ernie began to write “Heavy” and make his mark in the world of one man shows.

These days you can find Ernie teaching personal storytelling to teens in inner city schools and incarceration facilities around Southern California.

Magnolia at Highland: Art Show – June 8th

For the last 3 years, EngAGE has been partnering with the Art Instruction Dept. at CSUSB (CalState University of San Bernardino) to bring 7-week art courses to the residents. These courses are part of their Spring Service Learning Class and Community Outreach Program. The courses are taught by CSUSB art students, who are guided by their instructors. The students come up with a curriculum and lesson plan, and present it to EngAGE for consideration. Then the students get to teach our residents and learn from them. A great example of inter-generational programming and a win-win situation for all involved!

This year, CSUSB was able to bring the residents not one, but two courses: a beginner painting class, and a reflection project using the concept of mirrors.

The participants’ pieces will be on display for their friends and neighbors next week.

Please join us for the show! ~ The Magnolia at Highland Senior Apartments, 2196 Medical Center Dr., San Bernardino, CA 92411.

Aging Reimagined Colloquium: Follow-up

We posted previously about the “Aging Reimagined Colloquium” on April 12, sponsored by SCAN, Long Beach State University, and the City of Long Beach. It featured panel discussions and presentations by educators, city officials, industry leaders, and senior healthcare experts. Tim Carpenter, CEO/Founder of EngAGE, and host and producer of the radio show Experience Talks, served as event emcee, lending his significant expertise to further amplify program discussions. The event was a great success, and we recently received this link to view the presentations and videos from that day. There is also a three-minute highlight video that captures the spirit of the effort.
