Memorial Day

A Coast Guardsman stands in silent reverence beside the resting place of a comrade in the Philippines. – The U.S. National Archives, 1944 – Learn more.

The National Council on Aging wrote this blog post about senior loneliness with winter holidays in mind, but noted today that it applies to weekends full of cookouts, too. Good point! And we should remember what Memorial Day is about: even though it’s often celebrated with cookouts, it is commemorating the men and women who gave their lives fighting for us. Many older people have lost friends and loved ones who served, so this is a particularly significant day for them and a significant opportunity for others to make sure they’re not alone.  Learn more about the meaning of Memorial Day here.

Then and Now Photographs of Centenarians

Photographer Jan Langer has a background in social anthropology which impacted his decision to create a photography project he calls, “Faces of Century.” “Langer sought out centenarians and asked them for photos of themselves in their youth. He then restaged their early photos in black-and-white, using the same simple setting and the same poses, and paired his remarkable series of portraits with his subjects’ images from decades ago. Langer started showing the work in Europe in 2013. Recently, it’s been discovered by the internet and shared on multiple art and design blogs.” Read more here and see some of the fascinating photos from this series. News from Pac Arts: Makers Space Studio

At the Pacific Avenue Arts Colony (Pac Arts) in San Pedro, CA, resident artists recently have been engaged in informative training sessions that oriented them to the newly appointed Makers Space studio. The training was led by room designer and builder, Allan White. The  Makers Space presents an opportunity for trained residents to build and create in a fully equipped woodshop. Artists learned about safety procedures and were given hands-on instruction on the various saws and drills.

After the Makers Space session, a few artists gathered in the Photo Space and attended a photography orientation with resident Bejan demonstrating how to set up the backdrops, stands, and lighting equipment.

This past weekend, Allan White concluded the four-session training for residents. Following the safety classes, students were instructed further on each machine as they worked on a Group Project: Jenga – Game and Box set.

Thanks to Meta Housing for their partnership with WSH Management and EngAGE in making this wonderful space and exciting opportunity happen for our residents!
