Old Pros at Melvyn’s Restaurant in Palm Springs

Although those of us of a certain age do our best to rise to the occasion as we’re faced with the constant and rapid changes inherent in modern life, there are times when a little stability, a little familiarity can be very appealing. Cue Melvyn’s restaurant. From the LA Times:

In most places, the past four decades have been a time of dizzying change. But at Melvyn’s restaurant, Frank only means Sinatra, Coachella headliners go unrecognized, and a steady patter of one-liners trumps talking politics.

Bobby Bolduc, 81, a dining room captain, has been working here for 42 years. He has seniority over waiter Manuel Castaneda, who’s worked 41 years, and maitre d’ Brian Ellis, who’s been here 42 years but started off as a backroom waiter under Bolduc.

Chef Juan Castaneda said he is in awe over the way “these gentlemen keep doing what they are are doing.” He’s been in charge of the kitchen for only 38 years.

Profiles: Theater Director Peter Brook

“Profiles” is an EngAGE Blog category devoted to occasional posts about older people who have made a significant creative impact in our world. Today’s subject: PETER BROOK.

From the LA Times: Director Peter Brook, still at it at 92, has lived through nearly a century of theater history. You’d never know it, though, by the way he moves through the world, traveling as light as possible so that he can continue to probe secret depths. . . .

The title of greatest living theater director, while debatable, isn’t empty flattery. Brook has led some of the finest English actors (Paul Scofield, Alec Guinness, Laurence Olivier, among them) to unforeseen heights. His productions of “Titus Andronicus,” “King Lear” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” revolutionized contemporary Shakespearean stagecraft. In “Marat/Sade,” Brook synthesized the revolutionary influences of Brecht and Artaud in a groundbreaking production that, like his sublimely craggy “Lear” with Scofield, has had a second life on film. . . .

In [his current production] “Battlefield,” Brook revisits “The Mahabharata” (which premiered at the Avignon Festival in 1985).

“Bandida” – A Pistol, a Plan, and Sensible Shoes

If you’ve not had the pleasure of seeing this entertaining 12 minute short comedy – or if you’d like to see it again – you can now enjoy it on our YouTube channel!

Bandida tells the story of an older woman who rides a senior bus to a convenience store, uses her walker to saunter up to the counter, puts on a mask à la the film Scream, and proceeds to rob the older Armenian gentleman who owns the place. However, during the course of this first-time felony, the story takes a surprising turn.

The film was written by a first-time screenwriter, Suzanne Knode. Suzanne had spent most of her life working to raise her kids as a single mom. A few years back, after she retired, she moved to the Burbank Senior Artists Colony. Suzanne thought she’d like to try her hand at writing, so she attended an EngAGE writing class at the Artists Colony.  Bandida was her class project. It was made into a short film by EngAGE, under the banner of “Last Gasp Productions.”

The making of her film, and her story of reinvention, was profiled on national television on the show This American Life on Showtime (promo here, purchase TAM here). She watched the premiere of her film along with an audience of hundreds at the El Portal Theater in the NoHo Arts District as part of the 2007 Valley Film Festival.

Suzanne continues to work on film and stage projects, and has taken up painting and mentoring at-risk teens. In 2010, she was selected as one of 11 subjects for a nationwide campaign and photo exhibit to help raise awareness of how people can keep their minds beautiful. The campaign, “Beautiful Minds: Finding Your Lifelong Potential,” is co-sponsored by the National Center for Creative Aging and Martek Biosciences, a company committed to Brain Health.

There’s a Tiny House Revolution in Portland, OR

Changing Aging reports about Portland’s pioneering policy of encouraging accessory dwellings as a way to promote sustainable growth, affordability, and a housing alternative for older people wanting to either stay put or to move near their children. “Known in the policy world as ‘ADUs’ – accessory dwelling units– these small homes come in many forms, including traditional basement ‘mother-in-law suites,’ apartments atop or inside garages, and backyard cottages . . . Portland hopes that through zoning changes and fee waivers, the number of ADUs will rapidly expand.”

In Burbank, new California state laws that took effect on January 1, 2017, resulted in the recent adoption of an interim ordinance concerning ADUs. If you are interested in how this affects the legal requirements for these kinds of dwellings, you can attend a community meeting on Wednesday, May, 17 2017 at 6:00 PM in Room 104 of the Community Services Building at 150 N. Third Street in Burbank. Learn more here.
