News from Tavarua: Art Show Success

The community of Carlsbad, CA; WSH Management; and Tavarua Senior Apartments residents enjoyed a wonderful art show reception last week. The residents displayed and shared their work while Madeline Brauhreiter from Carlsbad High School Orchestra played her cello. The beautiful instrumental music added a relaxing atmosphere while residents and the Carlsbad community viewed the artwork in Tavarua’s community room. (We posted about the preparations for the show here and here.)

Free Tax Preparation Help

The Los Angeles Public Library has partnered with the AARP Tax Foundation, CSULA, CSUN, and UCLA to provide free income tax preparation at selected libraries. Click here for more information.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities, and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. In addition to VITA, the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program offers free tax help for all taxpayers, particularly those who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors. The IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with non-profit organizations that receive grants from the IRS. More info at the IRS website.

Doing your own tax prep? Here are a few tips from the IRS that you should know.

The tax filing deadline date in 2017 is Tuesday, April 18 rather than the traditional April 15 date. In 2017, April 15 falls on a Saturday, and this would usually move the filing deadline to the following Monday — April 17. However, Emancipation Day — a legal holiday in the District of Columbia — will be observed on that Monday, which pushes the nation’s filing deadline to Tuesday, April 18, 2017. Under the tax law, legal holidays in the District of Columbia affect the filing deadline across the nation.
