News from Tavarua: Gardening

At Tavarua in Carlsbad, CA, Community Gardening promotes nutrition, community building, and overall well being. With high interest and demand, Program Assistant Tracy Freeburg has reached out to Armstrong Nurseries for gardening tips and education, including a guest speaker, at Tavarua.  Residents are anxious to learn the ins and outs of their garden. A resource binder for gardening was created and placed in the shed for easy reference. The results? Beautiful!

Health News: The Value of Silence

HEALTH“This Is Your Brain on Silence,” an article in Nautilus (a different kind of science magazine that delivers big-picture science by reporting on a single monthly topic from multiple perspectives), offers fascinating perspective on the value of silence, including this:

“[In 2013] a Duke University regenerative biologist, Imke Kirste . . . found that two hours of silence per day prompted cell development in the hippocampus, the brain region related to the formation of memory, involving the senses. . . Conditions like dementia and depression have been associated with decreasing rates of neurogenesis in the hippocampus. If a link between silence and neurogenesis could be established in humans, she says, perhaps neurologists could find a therapeutic use for silence.”

Worth Repeating: Aging Gay Veterans Battle for Honorable Military Discharges

“Worth Repeating” is a weekly feature on the EngAGE Blog that will bring you previous
posts that we think are still timely, interesting, or just plain fun! From 9/15/15:

WORTH-REPEATING

“When the Army discharged Pvt. Donald Hallman in 1955 for being what it called a ‘Class II homosexual,’ the 21-year-old was so scared of being an outcast that he burned all his military records, save for a single dog tag he hid away. . . . But this summer, Mr. Hallman, now 82, retrieved the dog tag from a keepsake box and began working through an application to the Department of Defense, asking that his decades-old discharge be upgraded from ‘undesirable’ to ‘honorable.’ ‘I’ve gotten to a point in my life where no one can hurt me now,’ he said. ‘I don’t care who knows, and I want to show I was an honorable person.’” Read more here.

News from Cotton’s Point: Food Donations

” You have two hands. One to help yourself, the second to help others.”

EngAGE recently developed a new partnership with Talega Life Ministries and Community Outreach Alliance to provide food and supplies for the Cotton’s Point residents in San Clemente, CA. Over 20 residents received food donations from the program. Residents were shuttled by Talega Life in three different trips to bring them to the donation center. They were greeted by many volunteers of all ages who enjoyed helping others on Labor Day weekend. Cotton’s Point residents were so grateful to receive a variety of fresh produce, meats, bread, and canned goods. We’re excited about this new partnership!

The_Seven_Per_Cent_Solution-1

NICHOLAS MEYER has achieved success as a novelist, screenwriter, and director. His many films as writer and/or director include Time After Time, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Sommersby, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, The Deceivers, Company Business, and The Human Stain.

He adapted the screenplay for his first film, The Seven-Per-Cent Solution, from his 1974 best-selling first novel of the same name. For his work, Meyer was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

The film tells the story of two of the greatest detectives in history—Sherlock Holmes and Sigmund Freud—who team up to solve a mystery in Vienna at the turn of the 20th century. The 1976 film, directed by Herbert Ross, brought the story to vivid cinematic life. The stellar cast includes Nicol Williamson as Holmes, Alan Arkin as Freud, Robert Duvall as Dr. Watson, along with Laurence Olivier, Vanessa Redgrave, Joel Grey, and Jeremy Kemp. Pauline Kael called the elegant, witty film “a highly civilized light entertainment.”

Recently, Meyer made an appearance at the 40th anniversary screening of the film at the Laemmle Royal Theater in West Los Angeles and, after the screening, participated in a Q&A moderated by Los Angeles Film Critics Association President Stephen Farber.

Experience Talks host John Semper Jr. recorded the interview.

Thanks to Mike McClellan, Stephen Farber, and the Laemmle Royal Theater for allowing us to share these interviews, which are part of their excellent Anniversary Classics Series.
