News from Portofino: Wind Chimes

At Portofino Villas in Pomona, CA, a dynamic crafts class introduces residents to an array of art techniques and media while encouraging their creative potential. Instructor Matt McMillon notes that the class has grown dramatically since June. The majority speaks Chinese, some speak Spanish, and there are a few English-speaking students, so communication is quite a challenge. But it doesn’t inhibit their creativity, as seen in these beaded wind chimes they worked on!

Ready, Steady, Balance: Prevent Falls in 2016

Every 11 seconds, an older adult is seen in an emergency department for a fall-related injury.

To highlight fall hazards and increase awareness about how to prevent and reduce falls, the California Department of Aging recognizes the first seven days of fall, September 22-28, 2016, as Fall Prevention Awareness Week. Also, remember to mark your calendars for September 22, 2016, the first day of fall, as the 9th annual National Falls Prevention Awareness Day, sponsored by the National Council on Aging (NCOA). There are many useful resources at that link.

Many falls are preventable. Stay safe with these falls prevention tips.

And check out Facebook Live: Sept. 22 @ 1 p.m. ET
Watch live on the NCOA Facebook Page as they walk through a house and demonstrate safety strategies and tips.

News from Magnolia @ Highland: Masks for the Senior Olympics Art Competition

Regional Programs Director Alma Wright reports on an exciting art project at the Magnolia at Highland Senior Apartments in San Bernardino: “Another epic art project, six months in the making! Self-Portraits in Sculptures (papier-mâché). They layered and layered, sanded, sculpted, and painted until they were satisfied with their creations. The class was forced to take a hard look at themselves throughout this project. They complained and joked about their less than perfect features along the way, but in the end it was a lesson on dignity, pride, and self-esteem. I’d say they’re ready for the Senior Olympics Art Competition next weekend!”

Fabulous! Learn more about the EngAGE Senior Olympics here (September 24th @ Cerritos Park East), and be sure to listen to this week’s Experience Talks radio show (Sunday, 9/18 @ 5 PM PT on 90.7 KPFK-FM and streaming online at www.kpfk.org) when EngAGE’s Nancy Goodhart and Ken Tambe will talk about the event with host Cynthia Friedlob.
