Common Scams and Frauds That Target Older People
Older people are often targeted by con artists who try to scam them using a variety of approaches, from hard-selling fake investment opportunities to posing as representatives from the IRS in order to get personal identity information like a Social Security number. The U.S.A. government website has a list of common scams along with what to do if you’ve been the victim of fraud. Click here for more information. Don’t hesitate to get help and report your experience to authorities. Many thousands of people have been tricked and your report could help end the career of a scammer!

In its nearly 80-year history, the position of U.S. Poet Laureate has been held by such poets as Robert Penn Warren, Robert Lowell, Robert Frost, Elizabeth Bishop, Joseph Brodsky, and Rita Dove. Juan Felipe Herrera will be the first Latino to hold the position. He just completed two years as California’s Poet Laureate. Read more about this inspiring former creative writing teacher here.

Two talented artists, both with studios at The Brewery in downtown L.A., share their stories and unique perspectives on the art world. Both artists have exhibited extensively, and both have many collectors of their work.

Ada Pullini Brown is a painter and educator. She was born in New York City where she began her art education at the High School of Art and Design, and later earned her BA in Studio Art at Queens College of the City University of New York. She earned her Master of Fine Arts as a Teaching Fellow at University of Houston. Ada is a Professor of Drawing and Painting at Rio Hondo College and the Director of ArTravel Workshops, a travel and painting program of the Brentwood Art Center. Learn more here.
Jill Sykes was born and raised in Los Angeles. She was trained at Otis Art Institute in L.A. and at the Academy of Art/Lone Mountain College in San Francisco. She has worked as a Graphic Designer and Illustrator in the fields of Film and Business Advertising, Animation, and Educational Media, as well as designing and implementing countless corporate logos. Over time her work became focused on painting, and in the late 1990’s she enrolled at the Santa Monica School of Design, Art & Architecture. Learn more here.

News from Magnolia @ Highland Senior Apartments: Art
“Discovery Through Art” is a new program at Magnolia @ Highland Senior Apartments in San Bernardino.
Program description: An 8 week course offered by CSUSB Art Instruction Department as part of their inter-generational community outreach program. The course’s curriculum aims to enable our seniors to discover aspects of themselves through multiple mediums of Art. RPD Alma Wright: “I always welcome the opportunity to work with CSUSB administrators and students. The kids get to test their art knowledge and teaching skills, and both generations get to learn from each other.”
From CSUSB Students, Cynthia Huerta & Lindsey McDonald –
Projects:
- Exploring our connection with nature through creating soft pastel landscapes.
- Conveying emotions through making oil pastel drawings using various techniques. Although our focus was to introduce different mediums, we also focused on mastering the technique and we touched on color theory, line work, and shapes.
- Learning about the different symbolism that exists in art and culture through the use of acrylic paint on canvas board.
- Creating and decorating clay pendants that are personally symbolic.
- Exploring collage through the use of memory and inspirational imagery.
Instructor’s notes: The class has been very calm and enjoyable for everyone. The participants are very accommodating and open to new art mediums and methods. They have been very happy and excited to participate in all of our art endeavors, and have been surprised at how well their work has turned out. They do feel challenged every time we introduce a new medium, but they always walk away happy. We have been proud to see the participants learn to trust their hands when it comes to producing the artwork. We have noticed immense growth in just a few classes and are excited to see what they will produce next.”
