News from Portofino: Art Class

At Portofino Villas in Pomona, Art with Matt is a dynamic class introducing residents to an array of art techniques and media while encouraging their own creative potential.

Projects:

  • Exploring watercolor and mixed media.
  • Chinese Sumi Ink Painting and collage.
  • Monoprinting: a form of printmaking in which students ink plates with brayers, create designs, and then run editions of their designs.

Instructor Matt McMillon notes: My students seemed very excited to be making art. All have been eager to learn and are very pleasant to work with. Each week I asked students what they wanted to work on and tailored my lesson plans around their interests. What made me most proud was when my students took their work with them and stated that they were going to display it in their homes. There were several students who had no prior experience making art and genuinely seemed to enjoy themselves in class. That also made me proud. Watching the artistic development of returning students is highly rewarding.

News from Magnolia@9th: Gardening

Summer’s underway at Magnolia at 9th Senior Apartments in San Bernardino!

Gardening Club: A community garden has been formed with the purpose of growing herbs, fruits, and vegetables to share among the residents. They are learning how to grow specific plants according to the season, and will eventually learn to prepare delicious, healthy dishes using their harvests. RPD Alma Wright: “I have visited the garden twice this month. The first day, I delivered soil and trellises; the other, I delivered a new plants: parsley, chives, tomatoes, onions, and lettuce, to name a few.  Resident Sandra absolutely enjoys this garden, and always keeps me informed of her neighbors’ wish lists. I try my best to provide whatever is needed. The Gardening Club works diligently caring for the garden and the grateful community has come to love and expect their harvest every week.”

Creativity at PacArts, Our San Pedro Arts Colony

Brave New World

At a time of troubling world events, we ask ourselves what we want our world to look like, to be, and we remind ourselves how important it is to keep our spirits high and to connect with those who remind of us of the beauty and joy of living.

Daniel Tyler Poenkhe and his wife Mai, two residents of PacArts – the San Pedro Arts Colony served by EngAGE – are deeply involved in this life-affirming work and will open it up via a live interactive theater experience called, appropriately, “Brave New World.” The show is being presented at the gorgeous, vintage Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro on Sunday, July 10th, at 5 p.m. Ticket and more information here. International Performer and TEDx Speaker, Daniel Tyler Pohnke, has been creating Empowering Entertainment all over the world with his project, Full Moon Rising. Now back in the USA after 7 years, his interactive theater experience, “Creating a Brave New World,” is a unique fusion of music, culture, dance, multimedia, and self-development.

Recently interviewed on “LA Talk Radio!” with Sam and Cherie, on “Sam in the Morning,” and in the Hollywood Times, Daniel said, “Since we have been back in the US (from Asia, Europe and Israel), we have had a deep longing to create a performance that is both entertaining and empowering. And there’s no better way to do it than by bringing music, dance, multi-media, and practical tools that we can use every day in fun and dynamic ways.”

Worth Repeating: Artist Ed Moses at 89

“Worth Repeating” is a weekly feature on the EngAGE Blog that will bring you previous posts that we think are still timely, interesting, or just plain fun! From 6/24/15:

WORTH-REPEATINGEd Moses has been painting for over 60 years. His was the second show at the now infamous Ferus Gallery in L.A., but his style of painting and drawing made him an anomaly there. His philosophy: “I asked myself one day, ‘What are you doing, Ed? Are you making pretty pictures? Are you making art?’ I said, ‘No, I’m not interested in art, and I’m not interested in making pretty pictures,’ but I am interested in discovering pictorial images that I hadn’t thought of before, so I invent ideas as I proceed that allows discoveries with the paint in whatever the situation is. One day, I noticed caterpillars, and as they traversed along the concrete, they would leave tracks where they’d been, so I like the idea that a brush could leave a track where it was, and therefore it would be like me tracking where I’ve been and where I’m going.” ~ Learn more about Ed Moses here.

News from Cotton’s Point: Memorial Day

2016_May-Cottons-Point-2Before we get too far past Memorial Day, here’s a report about how one EngAGE senior veteran marked the occasion:

“Mr. Duffy is a resident at Cotton’s Point Senior Apartments in San Clemente, CA. Each week he goes to the San Clemente VFW and actively attends events. He either takes a taxi or a fellow marine picks him up. The city of San Clemente celebrates several holidays with veterans each year. The last couple of years, I joined him at the Memorial Day event at the San Clemente Marine Memorial. He proudly sits by his comrades. My good friend, Col. Buell, was one of the guest speakers this year and looked for him because I couldn’t attend. They shared stories, which helps every marine get through a difficult day. Honestly, I think Mr. Duffy’s day was made when he was greeted by such a wonderful officer. We are so lucky to have Mr. Duffy in our lives. He truly is a wonderful Marine. Semper Fi.”

BRUCE GRAY is a sculptor and artist from Los Angeles. His work includes colorful and clever kinetic art, rolling ball machines, mobiles, giant objects, abstract paintings, magnetic sculptures, functional art, modern metal sculptures, and more. It has been featured at many museums, art galleries, in over 36 books, and countless times on TV and in movies.

At left: Recently, several of Bruce’s robot sculptures were exhibited at The Automobile Driving Museum in El Segundo, CA, for the show “After Hours at the ADM: A Vehicle to Art.”  This photograph is of Gray with his giant blue robot, “Tesla,” and some of his smaller robot series.

News from Andalucía: Cooking

From Andalucía in Van Nuys, CA: Anne Apra is a professional caterer who has been teaching Cooking Classes at Andalucía for two years.  As we enter summer, Anne taught the group how to make Spring Pea Soup (good hot or chilled!) and a lovely simple salad with cherry tomatoes, spring greens, cucumbers, cauliflower, and a Dijon citrus dressing. One of the residents brought her grandchild and we are going to be encouraging more of that in the future.
