Richard Lederer is a verbivore: “Carnivores eat meat; herbivores eat plants and vegetables; verbivores devour words.” In fact, Dr. Lederer is the author of more than 40 books about language, history, and humor, including his best-selling Anguished English. His observations on language appear in magazines throughout the United States, and “Lederer on Language” appears each Saturday in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Dr. Lederer recently posted on his blog:
“About a month ago in this space, I illuminated old expressions that have become obsolete because of the inexorable march of technology. These phrases included “don’t touch that dial,” “carbon copy,” “you sound like a broken record,” and “hung out to dry.” A bevy of readers have asked me to shine light on more faded words and expressions, and I am happy to oblige.
“Back in the olden days we had a lot of moxie. We’d put on our best bib and tucker and straighten up and fly right. Hubba-hubba! We’d cut a rug in some juke joint and then go necking and petting and smooching and spooning and billing and cooing and pitching woo in hot rods and jalopies in some passion pit or lovers’ lane. Heavens to Betsy! Gee whillikers! Jumpin’ Jehoshaphat! Holy moley! We were in like Flynn and living the life of Riley, and even a regular guy couldn’t accuse us of being a knucklehead, a nincompoop or a pill. Not for all the tea in China!”

An article in the Star Tribune presents some of our plans to expand the EngAGE approach to aging to Minneapolis:
“…after receiving a grant from Minneapolis-based Aroha Philanthropies, the idea man behind senior artists colonies — Los Angeles nonprofit director Tim Carpenter — has teamed with local real estate developer Chuck Leer (president of the North Loop real estate development firm, North First Ventures) to bring the concept to Minnesota.”
One possible source of innovative arts-based programming in Minneapolis is the non-profit MacPhail Center for Music, which has a well-established adult music program. MacPhail Chief Executive Kyle Carpenter (no relation to Tim Carpenter) is on the steering committee of the senior artists colony project.

Since 1998, she has helped establish seven domestic and international microfinance organizations under the Capital Sisters umbrella, raised loan capital for tens of thousands of women’s micro businesses in 25 countries, and served as a Microfinance Advisor to the State Department where she represented the U.S. in the 21-nation Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC) for a decade as head of the Women Leaders Network. She served on the board of The International Alliance for Women, and was the Co-founder and Managing Director of their Microenterprise Development Program for its first decade. Within the U.S., Patricia was the Co-founder of Colorado Microcredit, the Micro Business Development Center, and the Colorado Microfinance Alliance. Patricia developed a passion for international affairs during tours in the U.S. Peace Corps in West and Southern Africa, an overseas posting in Europe, and travel to more than 60 countries. Patricia has a BA in Political Science and Economics from the University of Colorado and Master of Public Policy and Program Evaluation from Denver University. LAURIE AHERN is the President of Disability Rights International and is responsible for all of the day-to-day operations of the organization. She also conducts human rights investigations and is the co- author of Torture not Treatment, United States; Torment not Treatment, Serbia; Behind Closed Doors, Turkey; and Hidden Suffering, Romania. For ten years before joining Disability Rights International, Ahern was the co-founder and co-director of the National Empowerment Center, Inc. (NEC), a national, federally funded recovery and technical assistance center for people diagnosed with mental illness and their families.
Ahern was the editor of the award-winning NEC newsletter and co-created the Empowerment Model of Recovery and the PACE model, a non-coercive alternative to Assertive Community Treatment. Her work has been featured in many professional journals, in the media, and has been translated into nine languages. She is the recipient of the National Mental Health Association’s Clifford Beers Award and the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law’s Advocacy Award. In addition, she has conducted workshops, given talks and organized conferences for consumers/survivors/users, families and mental health providers to promote recovery. Ahern is the former vice president of the National Association of Rights, Protection and Advocacy (NARPA) and editor of the NARPA newsletter, The Tenet. Prior to her position at the NEC, she was the managing editor of several newspapers and freelance writer for The Boston Globe and Associated Press and has won national awards for her investigative and editorial writing and reporting. From Tavarua Senior Apartments in Carlsbad, CA:
The community garden is planted, with residents caring for their seasonal flowers and vegetables. With a new planting season approaching, some residents gathered to discussed the current state of the community garden and what they would like to happen to the future gardens. Topics covered were eating healthily, budget meals, and gardening techniques. Tavarua has 11 planters that are maintained by residents. One resident drew a map of the garden and all the boxes that are in it. We jotted down who currently was using which boxes. Available boxes were then assigned to those who were interested. Residents are making the most of their finances by using home grown herbs and vegetables.
Art class, taught by instructor Linda Luisi, provides an opportunity for residents to explore their creativity through various mediums. In March, artists continued to use oils and pastels to create outlines of a giant leaf on petal paper with light media on the dark petal paper background. Everyone was eager for the community Art Show on March 17th. The show, “Dreams and Visions,” allowed residents the opportunity to highlight their work for friends, family, and the public to view. H.B.Harton played his guitar while guests and artists enjoyed St. Patrick’s Day festive food and many excellent conversations! (Click to enlarge the photos.)

Reader’s Theater is led by a former stage manager and writer, and meets
weekly to read short plays out loud to share the group’s passion for the Dramatic Arts
and forge lasting friendships. “Life as We Live It” brought down the house with a
theatrical event of four short one-act comedic plays.
Each of the cast members assembled their own costumes and props, and entertained the enthusiastic audience. The troupe looks forward to their next dinner theater production in June. — Barbara Fay, Reader’s Theater Resident Director
