Art Class Instructor Meloney Morse reports: “We use a different medium each week and learn a new technique every class. Students are always encouraged to create a finished product.  Anna is especially appreciative and encourages everyone’s creativity.

MONEYFinancial Literacy guest speaker Ly Bui presented information about different types of banks, safe banking tips, smart budgeting, and how to avoid common financial frauds and scams.  Regional Programs Director Melony Morse commented : “Everyone enjoyed and appreciated the informational talk.  The presenter provided handouts and answered all questions.”

News from Metro Chinatown: Art and Hand-crafting

Art and hand-crafting classes provide an opportunity for residents to explore their creativity through various mediums. Recently, Art Instructor Fabian Debora introduced the technique of using ink. Residents enjoyed and were amazed by the medium’s fluidity. Fabian describes the communication and relationship building that happens between the residents and him as “magical.”

Instructor Laura Martos led hand-crafting classes in which residents prepared for spring and created decorations for in- and outdoors.

May Is Older Americans Month

2016 Older Ams MonthAt EngAGE, we like to celebrate older people every day, but May is the official month for this special event. This year’s theme is “Blaze a Trail,” something our EngAGE community residents would support wholeheartedly!

From the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Administration for Community Living:

When Older Americans Month was established in 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday. About a third of older Americans lived in poverty and there were few programs to meet their needs. Interest in older Americans and their concerns was growing. A meeting in April 1963 between President John F. Kennedy and members of the National Council of Senior Citizens led to designating May as “Senior Citizens Month,” the prelude to “Older Americans Month.”

Historically, Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country, in particular those who defended our country. Every President since Kennedy has issued a formal proclamation during or before the month of May asking that the entire nation pay tribute in some way to older persons in their communities. Older Americans Month is celebrated across the country through ceremonies, events, fairs, and other such activities.

SENIOR-SERVICESThe Museum of Modern Art in New York celebrated Older Americans Month by offering free admission to anyone over 65 on May 1, and continuing discounts for the remainder of the month. STILL DREAMING is the multi-award winning, uproarious film about the powers of creativity, and how engaging in art-making can deeply enrich our lives at any age.

At The Lillian Booth Actors Home just outside New York City, a group of long-retired Broadway entertainers dive into a production of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and find that nothing is what it seems to be. With a play that is usually about young love and sex farce, this ensemble finds that for them, the themes of perception, reality and dreaming deeply resonate.

This wistful, honest, and frequently hilarious documentary follows the rehearsals as opening night approaches. Tempers flare, health concerns abound, and disaster seems imminent. But as these former entertainers forge ahead, they realize that creativity is a magical force of renewal.

Los Angeles Town Halls: Cultural Equity & Inclusion Initiative

CREATIVE-ARTS-textThe first of 12 Town Halls for LA County’s Cultural Equity & Inclusion Initiative takes place on May 2nd in Torrance at 7 pm. Members of the general public are invited to join the conversation and share their comments, ideas and recommendations. Town hall participants will take an active role in helping shape the future of arts and culture in LA County. Town halls are part of a large, inclusive process that will culminate with a report back to the Board of Supervisors with actionable recommendations for the County and the field-at-large. Additional support for the initiative is provided by the Weingart Foundation and the Durfee Foundation, in collaboration with Arts for LA.

Town halls are FREE but attendees are encouraged to RSVP here.
