Joan Williams was denied the chance to ride as “Miss Crown City” in the Tournament of Roses Parade in 1958 when it was discovered that she was black. But on Thursday, the city of Pasadena finally will honor the 82-year-old who will be riding on the lead float in the 126th annual parade. Story here.

Once upon a time, space was quiet. This was before satellites had cluttered the orbit of the earth, beaming TV shows and text messages and GPS coordinates.
Before 1958, space was very quiet.
On December 18, 1958, the Air Force placed the first communications satellite, a Project SCORE relay vehicle, into orbit.
And then, on December 19, the sound of the a human voice was transmitted through space. It was the voice of President Eisenhower, broadcasting a message of peace to the world below.
This is the President of the United States speaking. Through the marvels of scientific advance, my voice is coming to you from a satellite circling in outer space. My message is a simple one. Through this unique means, I convey to you and all mankind America’s wish for peace on earth and good will to men everywhere.

Place the cursor on the video screen where it will turn into a hand-shaped grabber. Press down and hold the left mouse button as if you were going to scroll down a regular page of text or photos, and move the mouse. Your can change your viewpoint to anywhere in the full 360 degree range of the scene, just as if you were there in person, turning around! You can also look up and down. If you pause the video, you can also look around the still frame in the same way.
360 videos work best if you use Chrome or Opera browsers.

For the past year, New York Times journalist John Leland and photographer Nicole Bengiveno have been documenting the lives of six New Yorkers over the age of 85 in a quest to answer these questions:
” What is reasonable to ask of old age? Beyond the assaults of poverty or illness, to what extent can people shape the quality of life in their late years?”
